This is the question: to bling or unbling?

My living room chandelier had its unveiling this weekend. (It had been wrapped in plastic for weeks). This photo doesn't really do it justice as it has the most beautiful scrollwork on the arms. I should have gotten up on the ladder to take a detail shot but oh well - you'll just have to take my word for it.

I like grand lighting - its like beautiful earrings with a simple outfit. So while I do love it, Im thinking it might be too much. Should I remove the crystals? Its a fine line between glam and gauche. What say you?

I won't do anything until the furniture is in and I can see the full effect but I wondering what the impressions are at first glance.

  1. On first glance, I love it. It is perfect for the room and the house. But then again, I love sparkle.

Show stopper....leave it be, it's so pretty !

But like you said you'll know once the furniture is in.

    I also love sparkle :)

  3. I think it's lovely, and your room is big enough to handle it. Plus it seems like you'll be going fairly pared-down with your furniture, so I doubt it will look too over-the-top.

You could always make it a seasonal thing--take them off in the summer, put them on for winter!

It looks beautiful, I'd love to see the details.

What is the big hole w/ wires for?

  5. Hmmmm...tricky. I'm leaning toward unbling because of the ornate-ness (I know, it's not a word) of the medallion, but it's hard to tell in a picture.

Let it percolate, I say. You'll either grow to love it or hate it!

  8. I love the chandelier. It is stunning and I think once all the furniture is in, you won't think it is to much. Happy decorating.

  12. I'm in the unbling camp as well at this point. I would definitely check it out with the furney and then see, though.

  13. Bling is winning by a vote of 6 to 2 (I didn't count a vote unless it was specifically written).

I don't think I'll add shades to the chandeliers. Its a little too cutesy for me to have all those shades. Plus I don't think this needs any more adornment.

I will add them for the sconces on the wall though. I found some black shades with gold interior trim at Lowes that I think might work. Must find smaller bulbs though.

  15. I like the bling. Your furniture taste (that you've shown) is so refined and spare and clean-lined that I think the fixture will be perfect. Your taste is marvellous.

P.S. Can you tell me what the cream colour was you painted your stair risers? It looks lovely! Is this the same colour you used on trim throughout...? I think you mentioned what that was, but I forgot. I am obsessed with colours that people love, so I can use them in the future without having to look at 500 chips! Thanks Mrs.L!

  16. I love the crystals and I'd keep it like it is. But I'm a bling kind of woman...

  17. Terri - the cream on the risers is the same on the trim. Its called "bone white" and its a premixed color from Benjamin Moore so you can buy it off the shelf.

  18. I've just discovered your blog, this morning.

My first thought at first glance is to leave as it is. It's beautiful. My vote is for bling!

I love the bling! From the picture the ceiling height looks perfect with the bling. Also,I think it will go well with the headboard that you are looking for.

  21. Welcome Pat, Rhoda and Anon.

To be clear - this is my living room, not my bedroom. Similar shape since my bedroom sits on top of my living room but a totally different room.
