I batted around a few ideas until I came to the conclusion that turning it into a work table would be a good second life for this. Its long and lean and would make a lovely space to roll out fabric, make invitations or any number of crafty endeavors. And since I have a perfectly unused box room, I had just the place for it.
It was dirty and lumpy with paint drips so while I could have just slapped a new coat of paint over it, I decided it needed to be stripped down before anything other decisions were made about it.
Enter Peel Away. If you've been a really long time reader of this blog, you'll remember my experience with striping. So I went back to this goopy green magic potion to get rid of the paint.
First I removed the hardware.
Then loaded the door up with the stuff - think frosting a cake.
Covered with parchment paper (Peel Away sells their own papers but I find wax paper to be a lot cheaper and work just as well.) and let sit for 24 hours.
The next morning I went out there with scraper in hand. The term "Peel Away" is a little misleading. Sure, some of it peels. But most of it has to be forcefully evicted with a sharp edge.
Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.
Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.
Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.
Two hours and two blisters later, this is the result. Close but no cigar.
I had hoped to finish the stripping this weekend but the upcyling gods did not smile upon me. Another coat is working its magic now. I'll have to clean it off in the dark tonight.
(Ran out of wax paper, turned to cling wrap to finish the job.)

Now that is love for a door, what a LOT of work! But seeing your history of turning the not so pretty into beautiful...it will be worth it I'm sure!

We have a similar door-stripping project to work on. We may have to try the Peel-Away, let me know how the second coat comes out!
How fabulous to live in a place where beautiful items are "trashed to treasure"!! This will make an amazing work table. And bravo on thinking it up- I have 2 large ones in my craft/sewing room and couldn't live without them! The box room won't know what hit it, when you're through!!

I think the paint stripping gods are not with either of us... I have to do round #3 on my mantle tomorrow night in hopes that I can get most of it off Wednesday! There's this little thing called time that I seem to lack!

Can't wait to see how it turns out! I tried to strip my windows and it was a disaster!! I am going to try to use the same stuff you used as have seen other bloggers use in the past. Have loads of woodwork that needs stripped and the orangy stuff never works.
I recently picked up the same door (mine might have 5 panels, can't remember) and am in the process of making a desk out of it for my new home office! I'm super excited, although I don't have to deal with the scrape, scrape, scrape because the "distressed" style is what I'm going with for my look...no need to stain or re-paint. You would go bonkers if you had a ReSource Yard like we do here in Boulder... it's amazing.
Wow! What a great project, can't wait to see how it turns out! I've been on the hunt for a paneled door to use as a screen, however, since we'll be moving in July I'm trying not to acquire any more large pieces before the move... but if I should find a door like this, I'll so be grabbing it up!

That is a great find. I wish I had your patience for the stripping. I was cringing just looking at all that scraping, scraping, scraping. haha! Im sure it is going to be beautiful when you get done with it though. Can't wait to see. Oh, I am a female, this is my husbands account.

i saw this stuff on Curb Appeal (HGTV)last night and was amazed. Is it super toxic? Love that door! Can't wait to see the finished product.

When I saw your last post about reusing a door you found I thought, "I hope she isn't making it into a workspace of sorts." Cause that was my brilliant idea that I sorta got from somewhere else but didn't want anyone to steal. Ha!
Can't wait to see what you come up with and how it compares to the grand images I have in my head of my someday door turn workspace... that hasn't even started to take shape. ;)

we didn't use plexi because it was more expensive- our table was about 79" x 30". We found a local dealer who cut it & sanded the edges for $80. For plexi glass they wanted $200+!
