Valentines Day: Thrifty, Nifty & Spendy

I fully realize the majority of my readers are women but I know there are at least one or two quiet guys that might stop by occassionally. With that in mind I'm sharing my Valentine Day gift suggestions. (And no, I have no ideas what a man would want despite this being my 14th v-day with Mr. L. If you have any ideas on that front, feel free to chime in.)

If you are:

Thrifty
So you're on a budget - No reason not to do something sweet on the cheap.

Adorable sweetie pies for your sweetie from the ever stylish Twig & Thistle. Or order in chinese and finish the meal with a handmade felt fortune cookie with something really sweet written inside. (from who else, Martha Stewart)

Nifty
So you want to make something with your own two hands?

Transform a vintage frame into message board (via Design Sponge) and cover it with heartfelt love notes just for her. Or surprise her with some super sweet pillowcases using iron on transfers courtesy of Creature Comforts.

Spendy
Feeling generous?

What says 'lets cuddle' more than a chic loveseat? You could go high end like the the one shown above (a 19th century antique from 1st dibs) or you could find something that suits you second hand. Bonus points for the effort of searching all over town. Or maybe your girl is more into personal style than home furnishings, then buy her the most impractical luxury a girl could want - an overpriced pair of shoes in a impractical color. The ones above real deal Louboutins but you can find a hot pair of shoes at nearly any price point.

And yes, I know its not a "real" holiday. I know its just another day and it means absolutely nothing. But lets face it - there are far too few days in our lives when we get to celebrate love. Why not take this opportunity to relish in some sickly sweet sappy moments just for the fun of it?

I hope I awoken some of your romantic sides. So what are you planning to do?

  1. Wouldn't it be nice to find that loveseat waiting for you on Valentine's Day?! Thanks for sharing.

Also, I know you've won a few awards already, but I'm tagging you with the Happy 101 Award. Keep up the good work on your blog. I really enjoy it.

  2. I love your ideas! I just posted about my "54 Reasons" Playing Cards that I made for my mom's birthday but they would make an awesome homemade Valentine's Day gift.

  3. My boyfriend and I are completely broke, so we're just going to spend the day together and make dinner together. Nothing too special, but time together is special enough because we rarely see each other.

As a sidenote, I am hosting a pillow giveaway you might be interested in - you can check it out here.

Hi! I just found your blog this morning through a post by My Notting Hill. I have spent several hours reading through your blog. I started at the beginning and I'm up to September of 08. I have really enjoyed reading through your renovation. My husband and I finished building our farmhouse and moved into it in August 09. I was struck by the similarities of our experiences. We had to work through some of the same issues when deciding on toilets (we went with standard height elongated bowls), cabinet colors (I wanted just the perfect color not too white and not too cream), counter tops (honed AB was my first choice but like you after reading reviews I decided against it), and paint colors (That decision was so hard I finally just picked and hoped for the best). Of course we had many a struggle getting contractors to do what we wanted and not what they thought was best as well. I really wanted an old home but after looking forever and never finding just what we wanted we decided to build a new home and try to make it look and feel old. Living in Brooklyn in a beautifully renovated home is always a dream for those of us who grow up in the country. Thanks for sharing.

  8. I'm trying to combine nifty and thrifty this year. I'm making Valentine's banners out of newspaper and a heart-shaped punch that I'll string about the living (the idea came via a Cori Kindred photo). I'm going to buy some white, dollar store pillar candles to place around the room as well, for romantic lighting. I'll add red glitter to the punched out hearts and glue them to the candles. And then, we'll have a lovely picnic on the floor, complete with good food, wine and some homemade chocolate covered strawberries.

  9. I give my husband the worst gifts that typically end up in the attic somewhere. He does have a sweet tooth so I'll try the apple pies this year.
    Think he'll appreciate that more.

  10. I bought a sampling of new wines (Malbec) for my guy to try - they are his favorite (+ a sweet handmade card). I also got a bottle of wine I know my sister likes (+ card) for my sister because her guy does not 'believe in' V-Day.

PS- I know that you enjoy vintage items, and that you like photography- I just got a "new" vintage plate camera from my grandpa (it looks similar to the one in your "like my photos" link) and I'm currently writing a blog post on it. You should check it out!

  16. Jay and I typically always do the same thing, whether it be for Valentine's Day or any other holiday: A trip to somewhere we've never visited before. It doesn't have to be some lavish, expensive thing...one time we spent the night in a charming little town about two hours away from where we live and spent the day shopping and enjoying the sights of a new place.

  17. PS...and the pillows?! CHEESE BALL, LOL! Seriously...don't put those on your bed :)

I'm so tired tonight yet I saw those shoes and I am in love so I had to comment! Love, love!

We just do small things for Valentine's, dinner for two and sweet cards with handwritten messages in them.

  22. I learned my lesson a few years ago when my husband and I had to wait for hours for a table at a restaurant on Valentine's Day. We now go a couple of days earlier.

  23. I'll take the message board :) I would love to see the look on my husband's face if I handed him a frame and some chalkboard paint and told him that's what I wanted!
