Style & Skill Crush: An Education

You already know by now that I take my share of long airplane trips. As a result, I watch movies that I wouldn't normally have seen. Today's Style & Skill crush goes to one of those movies: An Education.

(I know, I know..it was nominated for an academy award and critically acclaimed everywhere so I'm not introducing something new at all. I just don't tend to watch these kinds of movies so it was new to me.)

I really want a photo of me and the mr. just like this. Can someone rent me a crane?

The movie has some great performances and interesting story line but I was far too distracted by the beautiful style that was laced into this film seamlessly to notice anything else.

Normally I'm not personally drawn into the 1960s style. (I lurrve the period around WWII. Have you seen Atonement? If you haven't go right now and do so. Thank me later.) That said, there was not a frame in this movie I didn't fall in love with. And while I'm still devoted to my dear husband, I think I might be in love with Carey Mulligan. I mean, really. Who can rock a tie and not look butch? She can!

The interiors were interesting as well. Notice how they painted the inside of the closet just like we did. Secret subliminal points there.

Danny's apartment was swish had all sorts of interesting pieces. Check out that piece to left of the blond. I want! Even the sets that were meant to be more drab and depressing like the school, the motel, etc. had something captivating.

'Nuff said? I know I'm not the only one who falls in love with a movie's style. What is your film style crush?

  3. Like you I saw this movie on an airplane and loved it and the style of the film. I'm dying to watch it again on a regular TV where the color is better.

  4. Oh, sometimes a movie just puts it all together in such a captivating way that it is impossible not to be enthralled! Mine is the remake of the Thomas Crown Affair, Rene Russo. I still can't get enough of that movie...oh, and of course my darling Pierce!

I absolutely loved the apartment in Sliding Doors. I actually bought the DVD so I could drool over it.

Carey Mulligan is a very pretty young girl, but I think Rosamund Pike was absolutely stunning. My favorite era was the mod 60s, in terms of fashion.

Another great set is the movie star's house in Gods and Monsters.

  12. I thought Julie and Julia had some really beautiful settings. Of course, the kitchens were especially beautiful! I also love movies set in Europe, their interiors always interest me!

  15. Loved the movie, and have to cast my vote for Diane Keaton's beach house in Something's Got to Give too. The condo in The Breakup was also pretty awesome.

I have been dying to see this movie since it was in theaters. Thanks for posting about it!

The movie whose style always makes me swoon is Revolutionary Road. The interiors are GORGEOUS in that movie.

  17. Loved this movie, too! I inadvertently read the book just a few months before all of the film awards not realizing it was such a hit. The book was terrific AND I thoroughly enjoyed the film. That doesn't usually happen. Totally share your Carrie Mulligan crush...so beautiful.

  18. Oh gosh, I have SO many film style crushes, not that I'd want to actually live in any of them. A lot of Tim Burton scenes inspire me. And I've always loved the idea of the Noah rebuilding the house for Ally in The Notebook.

(And can you believe I've never heard of this movie?)

  19. I am head over hills in love with the apartment in P.S. I Love You. Everything is perfection and I want it. But yes, An Education was also beautifully done.

  20. PRACTICAL MAGIC and GOSFORD PARK have great kitchens, complete with butler's pantry, larder, scullery, conservatory, etc.

  21. I love Lynn Bracken's (Kim Basinger's) boudoir/apartment in L.A. Confidential. It's dreamy. :o)

Oh, and I am so going to try to rock a tie like Carey Mulligan!

  22. I totally love the early 1960's style in clothing. It's probably why I love Mad Men because of the time period.

  23. I can't get over the homes in The Holiday. I covet Cameron Diaz's character's house in LA. Jude Law's house in England is totally gorgeous too. And even though it's not my style, the English cottage where the Kate Winslet character lives is so very charming.

  24. I Also love the kitchen in practical magic! Julie and Julia was also fantastic.

  25. I'm going to have to check this one out - thanks! I really loved the condo in the break up, and I have always and will always love charlottes home (both in the series and the movie SATC) - It's a little too formal for my real life, but I adore it!

  26. The '60's are totally my cup of tea. It's no wonder I devour episodes of Mad Men just for the wardrobe/set design. Never even heard of this movie, where've I been?! Thanks!

I wonder if future generations will look back & say they loved our decor? Because it's really just a mix of past eras. Interesting.

  27. You've Got Mail! Not only is it my favorite movie, but I'm also in love with Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly's apartments and the shop around the corner. Plus, I love all of Meg Ryan's outfits and the soundtrack. This movie has it all :-)

Oh, you're all making me want to break out my dvds and have a gorgeous interiors marathon. Co-sign on the _You've Got Mail_ and _Something's Gotta Give_ interiors. My personal all-time favorite movie style crush is _Amelie_. My bestie and I refer to home decor stuff I'd like as "amelicious" because of my crazy love for that movie.

  30. The house where Meryl Streep lives in "It's Complicated" is like another character in the movie--the perfect life-nest-safe haven she's made for herself. Several critics panned it as a movie set in a "lifestyle magazine" but that's exactly how it FIT--she had created a lifestyle. I also appreciated the allegory of her architect being someone who was augmenting not only her life, but her house in positive ways--only when she was ready to grow in both areas, could construction begin, and she be elevated to a place where she could see the sunset--physically, and the sunset of her life.

  31. Will have to check out this movie! Thanks for the heads up...

As for my favorite movie style, I would agree with Caroline and The Holiday. Both the California homes and the ones in England - my favorite is the home of Jude Law's character! To die for!!!

I'm also a huge fan of the scenes in It's Complicated.

Did anyone love Molly Ringwald's bedroom in Sixteen Candles? I loved attic bedrooms and always wanted one like hers when I was a teenager. Kind of silly I know. Who else loved the inn in Nights in Rodanthe-the colors were such a lively mix of blues.

not sure if it was intentional, but Atonement was set during WWI, not WWII. Although both eras had delicious styles!

  35. Karen: Atonement starts in 1935 and then goes thru WWII. WWI was considerably before 1935.

  36. You are not alone, I have yet to see this movie as well. Don't you think Carey Mulligan looks like Michelle Williams?

Far too many movies for me to narrow it down. All I can say is that my husband always laughs because I will start talking about details of the set design and he never recalls anything but the storyline.

    Have You Heard of This?
I have to agree with many of the movies mentioned (Amelie, Something's Got to Give, You've Got Mail). I also get those warm and fuzzy feelings for Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. There are a few movies that I've seen that I'd never heard of before Netflix that I drool over the sets everytime. Give yourself a treat and look up The Red Baron with Joseph Fiennes and Passion of Mind with Demi Moore. You'll see what I mean.
