Stumpworks!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm loving the tree stump turned table idea. I actually scored a little pile of tree stumps (not ideal but its what I have) after being inspired by Kara Paslay's use of one as a nighstand. They've been sitting out in my yard for the full year so I'm not sure what shape they are in but I'm going to give a go at the project this weekend. Wish me luck!

She was even kind enough to do a video tutorial on her blog after I had asked her about it.

And evidently there are a few other stumpers out there who have managed to do this sucessfully. As Im completely enamored with these, they are worth a share.

This version from Under Construction involves leaving the bark on and adding some padding.

This example from Martha Stewart has the stumps all shiny lacquer red. Hot.

A slightly more upscale interpretation straight from Adrian Grenier's home courtesy of renest.

If you want to completely avoid getting your hands dirty, you can buy one from West Elm.

While clearly not an actual tree stump, this side table, from a company called Because We Can, would be just about adorable in a nursery. Don't you think?

Thats enough inspiration for now. Are there any other stumpers out there? I'd love to see what you've done with landscaping cast offs.

Just be sure to put something between the stump and the floor. We have a "stump table" on our patio and the sap has made a stain where it sits.

I have just removed some from the house after finding signs of insect activity, not a happy thought. Google has suggested several remedies so I'll try them this weekend.

Apparently one brilliant way is to singe all surfaces with a blowtorch, then brush down. I'm intrigued, would look different...

  6. I'm not sure which stumps I like better, the natural earthy ones or fun lacquered ones. I can't wait to see what you come up with for your stump.

We're doing a discussion board on our blog today on how design can be like therapy. I'd love to see what your thoughts are on the subject.

  9. After reading the comments, I wanted to let you know that torching the outside of the wood does actually make it repel insects if you can get your hands on one. Another thing I have tried since making those other side tables is bleach. I just rubbed it on evenly with a sponge and let it sit in the sun. The result was really beautiful. Also, as mentioned above it does take a while for the stumps to dry out completely, so putting a small piece of wood or plastic under the stump is a good idea for a while. Ok, that's all my input-sorry if I've bored you! :)

  10. I don't have a blowtorch so that isn't going to be an option. I have had these stumps sitting in my sunny backyard (on pavers) for more than a year so I'm hoping they have dried out enough but now Im concerned about bugs living inside I don't know about. This might not work out as well as I hope but we'll see.

  11. I love the shiny lacquered martha versions (I'd do either a bright lime green or turquoise though!)

  12. The red. Wow.

As a color lover, it's so hard for me to not want to whip out a saturated hue of paint on all the things I own!

It's funny. I've always loved the tree stump look, and I've often wondered how hard it would be to make our own. Kara, you've given me inspiration! And Mrs. Limestone, if anyone can pull it off, it's you!

  15. Totally cool! Can hardly wait to see yours!
I spray painted some thick dead branches orange, and I love them, and I think the spray paint probs killed any bugs that may have been lurking ha ha.
