Junk Drawer Overhaul: Chargers Made Lovely

Today I'm so happy to have Nicole of Making it Lovely share a clever little junk organizing idea. Nicole's blog was one of the very first I frequented and admired way back when I discovered this little underworld of blogging so when she agreed to participate in the series, I was so excited. Her blog is a source of constant inspiration.

Brandon and I tend to charge our cell phones (and miscellaneous other devices) in the kitchen. That's fine, except I hated seeing the chargers sitting out all the time.

We could have tucked them into a drawer, but we didn't really have any more room in any of them. Besides, does the 'junk drawer' really need any more junk? Then I looked over at the empty canister sitting on the other side of the kitchen. Aha!

There's a power strip directly above the canister, so it's actually a better place to plug our devices into than the other outlet we were using. Then we just tuck the charger and the cord back into the canister until we need it next time. Perfect.

Great idea! When I first read charger I was thinking of the kind you use for tablesetting!! :)

  4. What a cute idea! I am going to have to try this one out, thanks!

  5. Haha, Jill, I thought tablesetting, too. Very chic idea for keeping the cord clutter out of sight. It's funny that she had an empty Orla Kiely canister sitting on her counter just waiting to be used.

  9. Wow, fab idea. I wish this was the only storage issue we have in the kitchen right now, but I suppose one thing at a time. Thanks for the idea.

Brilliant! My husband would actually do this, too.

  11. I did this exact same thing several months ago with an old Tongue Depressors apothecary jar I picked up at a yard sale. Just cut a piece of white cardstock to fit inside it (so you couldn't see through the glass), and voila! Much less clutter. Love it!

  13. great idea! i put a photo of my kids and a candle votive infront of the ugly phone cords - so much better looking at my happy boys instead of the cords!

  14. i love this idea - in part because it is an excuse to buy a beautiful canister. :) i've considered those charging stations, but i like this solution.

  15. And it's Orla Kiely (for Target variety?). Such a great use for a beautiful container (that you almost HATE to get dirty with flour or sugar!).

  16. I'll pass on a trick as well....not as simple, but it works especially well when you are in a kitchen remodel. Have the electrician install a plug inside one of your base cabinets. After the countertop is installed, the fabricator or tile person can cut a hole in the back of the countertop over the cabinet with the plug. Plug in your chargers and place them inside the cabinet and run the cords up through the hole. I've done this in my home and in many of the kitchens I've designed. It works great. The hole is easily hidden by whatever you put on the countertop. No more mess!

I do this too, only my chargers were on a living room sidetable and I put them in a decorative box on the table's lower shelf.

But seeing this, I wish my family would leave them charging in the kitchen!

  20. The simplest solutions are the best, aren't they? Nicole, I love your solution. I have cords and chargers at home but it's the ones at the office that are an unsightly mess to anyone glancing in my office as they walk down the hall! Now I have a solution for both home and work. *bowing* thank you sooo much!

  21. *the pear canister is an Orla Kiely one from her line at Target in 2010 (or was it 2009?).

  22. Cords are the bane of my existence!

  23. i implemented the same system in my bathroom several months ago and have been so pleased with it. my electric toothbrush, razor and clarisonic chargers all fit perfectly in my liberty of london canister. (you're not the only one to take advantage of the "___ for target" finds!) so glad the rest of the world can now enjoy this smart organization technique as well. xo

  25. YOU are a GENIUS!!! I have been so annoyed with the cords and chargers on the kitchen counter. I cannot stand it. This is seriously genius. I will be heading out this weekend to find a canister to put our chargers and cords in. The canisters we currently have for flour and sugar are clear glass ones so that wouldn't really work to HIDE the chargers and cords. I am thrilled to have come across this post today!! Cannot wait to come back for more ideas. Thanks!

  26. Love this idea. The number 1 argument I have with my husband is...CHARGERS everywhere. This is a perfect solution for his bedside table.

  27. I love this idea. Although I found what works for me is the purchase of this little plastic holder: http://www.amazon.com/Get-Organized-CHARGING-SHELF-BLACK/dp/B001WPAT9E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1296236664&sr=8-3 I have a wall outlet on the bottom of my kitchen island, so I leave the cord bundled up and rest my phone on the flat base. No messy cords and no counter tops used!

  28. I so need to find the right type of canister - because my bedroom is so neat and nice except for the puddle of cords for my cell and mackbook and heating pad (dont ask!). It makes the entire room always look like a mess. I definitely need to fix this. on the hunt for the proper floor canister! wish me luck

    best,
    hallie

  29. I do that too! I have a set of four green, vintage canisters on the bench under a power outlet. Each canister has different, useful things in it, but one has phone and iPod chargers tucked inside.
