Favorite Nook: Our Humble Abowed

Today's favorite nook comes from Amanda of Our Humble Abowed.

Its a blog to watch - not even a year old but full of beautiful ideas as they transform their home into a clean, lovely space one project at a time. If you happen to have a thing for molding and built-ins (like me), you need to start following asap.

I was thrilled when Mrs. Limestone asked if I would like to share my favorite nook. Immediately, I know what room I wanted to share, my office, specifically, my bookshelf.

My office bookshelf is my favorite area in our house for a few reasons. Number one, it's mine, all mine. In a house with an unorganized (all be it, handsome) husband and two young, messy boys, it feels good to have a space of my own. No need to ask for Ben's opinion, I simply have what I love in the space. Because I'm the only one using this space, things are exactly as I leave them, organized and always in place, which is perfect for my OCD tendencies. Reason number two, a year ago, we finished our basement.

Transforming the empty shell to finished living space doubled our square footage, so it is still quite new. Number three, it's a fun space to decorate (and redecorate) as I need/feel. Shortly after (the next day) the office was finished, our youngest son was born. In a hurry to get things done, I randomly placed items on the shelves.

Most of our books, magazines and office supplies are on the shelves, but I've mixed in decorative items to keep it from looking like a sterile storage space. Finally, when I had caught up a little on my sleep, I organized my books and truly decorated my shelves.

Since then, I've added three modern portraits along with a custom painting of our dog to personalize the space. The decorating options are as endless as the storage space, but if I could change one thing, I would consider painting the backs of the shelves. Probably the same blue-green as the theater room.

I can totally relate to the joy of having space that's all yours. This is beautiful and so fun to play with, change up as the mood changes. I really like how you've put it all together Amanda.

  3. Those shelves are styled beautifully, there is such an art to it. I can relate to having two messy boys. Mine will make a shelf their own, and not in a good way...

  5. A book shelf would definitely be included in one of my favorite nooks! I'd love a large one like this!

Thank you so much, Stefanie! And thank you all for your sweet compliments! Tina, there definitely is an art to it. I've actually been asked several times for tips on styling, so, for anyone interested, here are a few links:
