Favorite Nook: Traci Zeller

Today's favorite nook comes from a wonderful interior design and blogger that specializes in clean and simple spaces - Traci Zeller.

In an unsual twist, I have actually met Traci (in person) and she is just as charming and lovely as her blog would have you believe. Now let's take a look at her favorite space. I love how she is using bits and bobs of one of her hobbies to decorate this room.

What a thrill to have Stefanie ask me to share my favorite nook! I love so many little spots in my house, but I decided to share the latest work in progress – what my husband Mike and I have nicknamed “cork: a wine room” (as if it were a restaurant).

Simply put, cork is nothing more than the bonus room over our garage … repurposed into a grown-up nook for entertaining and enjoying a good glass of wine. I wish I could have gotten better photos, but – as you might imagine – the natural light coming into the room is limited. Hopefully, you’ll be able to get a sense of how inviting the room really is.

I chose a very dark wall color (Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams) to create a cozy, intimate feel. Up the stairs to the bonus room, I’ve hung the sides of wooden wine boxes. Some of the boxes are so ornate that they truly are small works of art.

Although the room itself is relatively large, the ceiling is sharply sloped on both sides. To make the best use of the space, we had cabinets custom-made into the corners. Amazingly, the cabinetmaker was able to create space for up to eight hundred bottles. A television rises out of the center cabinet, also custom-made, but we more often use it as a sideboard for hors d’oeuvres.

The furniture is concentrated towards the middle of the room – because you’d hit your head any other way. Fortunately, there is room for a pair of club chairs and a sofa.

The large cocktail table is taller than ordinary coffee table height, but lower than dining table height – a nice compromise that allows it to serve both functions. Ottomans tucked underneath the table serve as extra seating. I’m not finished with the room just yet. I still need pillows for the sofa, window treatments, a throw blanket and some accessories. Those things will come soon enough, however, and – in the meantime – we are enjoying our space and hosting impromptu wine tastings!

Stefanie, is that enough for me to convince you to make a road trip to North Carolina? Thank you soooo much for having me over at your inspiring blog!

  2. Great space for entertaining. I love her use of the sides of wine crates, as I have seen them used for backsplashes for bars as well. Love the wine storage.

  8. What a great nook! I'm loving this series. Sometimes the tiniest spaces are our favorite. I just hung my silhouette collection in my office, but I hung them in what used to be a closet - I removed the doors for more room space. It is not finished yet, but quickly becoming my favorite spot! Looking forward to more favorite nook posts!!!

  11. Beautiful space! Love the colors! Are the cabinets temperature controlled? Do you run into issues with that in an upstairs room in the South?

  19. Hey, Sara! Yes, the cabinets have a separate cooling system and are tightly sealed to maintain the cellar temperature. We definitely couldn't store wine up there otherwise.
