Inexpert guides?

Lately I’ve gotten several emails about travel tips and I’ve been wrestling with whether I should do something to answer those questions broadly on the blog. The thing is, I don’t really consider myself an expert. Sure I like to travel – I could talk for hours about our trips – but my experiences don’t make me a professor. I know I don’t like overly preachy blogs so I don’t want to turn this into one. In other words, it makes me uncomfortable to write any sort of instructional guide to travel. Really, who do I think I am?

As an aside, I heart snapshots of Einstein. If I had a library I'd do a whole tribute wall to him!

That said, it seems some people might like to hear more about it and I just might have some info to share on the subject. So the question is – is this something you would be interested in reading? I was thinking of doing a three part travel series – one on planning a trip, one on packing light and another on how to take better travel photos. Interested or snooze fest?

And while we are on the subject, feel free to let me know if there are any other post topics, tutorials or tips you’d like me to cover as well. I’m all ears.

I love to travel and would welcome your thoughts.  I would appreciate any color/ paint recommendations for exterior paints.  We have unexpectedly found ourselves in need of a new roof.  Our house  is a white cape cod currently with a green roof, green shutters, and green front door.  I'm considering painting the shutters black and the front door red.   Any specific roofing recs would be welcomed too.  Love your blog. Thanks.

  3. Would love to know how to pack light and taking better photos is definitely of interest.  I always have too much or not enough (and I always seem to forget my pj's)

  4. I'd love to hear your tips on planning a trip. From picking where to go, when, how to score deals, and how you decide what is worth your time and what isn't.

  5. Great idea! I LOVE travel so would be interested to see what tips you have. You could even do a travel linky encouraging folks to write a post about their travels or tips and link in!

Love this idea. I don't travel as extensively as you do, but I do travel. In fact, all of my friends come to me because I'm such a great packer. I helped my aunt pack her family of four for 15 days in China when they went to adopt my cousin. She was amazed and said how much she wished I would be there to help her get home.

I've played around with doing something similar, so I'd love to see what you come up with.

Yes, your travel ideas would be greatly appreciated! You all seem to pull off some pretty big trips with a minimum of stress.

Yes I think a travel series would be great, especially the photography tips. Don't forget to include "How to take great travel pics and not look like a tourist" :-)

  13. You're right about preachy blogs, but I do think that you can share tips that you have learned over the years without making it sound like it's your way or the highway.  It is always interesting to hear what works well for others.

I'm interested for sure, particularly in the travel photo part.

  15. Oo oo! I would love to know more about the planning process! How do you decide what things to see, what is a priority, how to get around in a foreign country, etc. Do you book everything before you leave, or do you "wing it" when you are there?? Thank you, I think this is an excellent series idea :)

  18. I'd love to read travel tips from you! I think a mini-series is a good idea. I want to take a vacation, but the idea of planning one is a bit overwhelming. We tend to go on cruises because it's all done for you! Haha.

I think travel tips and info are always welcome.  Even if they might not apply now - they may apply in the future when you need some help with travel - and will be able to come right back to your blog for some tips.

  23. I think those would all be great!  You may not consider yourself an expert, but you've traveled so much more (in better style and to cooler places) than I think a majority of people have.  It would be like getting advice from a trusted friend! Some people may only ever get to take one really great vacation out of the country in their lifetime and they won't want to miss out or "screw it up."  You don't seem to have a problem with "screwing up" vacations - you guys totally do it right!

As for other subjects, I'd love to hear about your search for your limestone.  Had you been saving and then BAM this diamond in the rough appeared or had  you looked at several over so many months (years?)? Were them some total duds?  What about supremely awesome homes way out of your price range? Everyone likes to hear about a good treasure hunt!

  25. I think it sounds like a fantastic idea! I am especially interested in the travel photo tips. As a mom, packing light is difficult...but it is a feat I am mastering. ;)

  27. I say do it.  I know I would definitely read it.  My husband and I travel but primarily for his work so some of our fun stuff has been squeezed in around that.  I'd love to hear what you have to say about taking better travel photos.  Goodness knows, I have certainly enjoyed yours and I just purchased a Canon 60D which I'm learning slow and steady.  So tips would certainly be useful and appreciated.  Hubby just gave a big thumbs up for packing light too as I am the queen of overpacking (so he says!).  ;)

  28. I say DO it! You've traveled more than practically anyone else I know who doesn't travel for a living, so that definitely makes you more of an expert that your average Jane. I'd love to hear your advice!

I hope it's not a snooze-fest, because I've been writing my Travel Q&A for the last two days for my blog! :) I'm struggling too, I'm no expert and only know what works for us!

I would love that! Some day I hope to be able to use your tips on a trip, and until then I look forward to always hearing about yours.

  32. I'm not an expert either, sometimes I just throw a dart and see where it lands, but I'd love to hear your tips, you never know, sharing out thoughts and tips might someday come in handy, like zip lock baggies and taping my shampoo, etc. A fellow blogger friend gave me that tip, but not before my hand cream exploded in my suitcase.

I think it's perfect and you definitely know how to travel.  I also love features on the places you visit and I always enjoy travel guides that recommend places to eat, sleep and shop because it's just that persons experience.  I have found lots of places to visit that way.  I can't wait to see your series!

  39. Interested in all THREE on travel.  Also some fun stories of things that have happened or you have experienced would be fun.  Maybe a bucket list of where you top 20 travel destinations would be?  A little visiting NYC recommendations.

We are world travelers who pack light.  I bet I could add to your packing entry with some great tips.  However, my photos aren't always so great.  I would love a photo tutorial, especially since I have a new Canon Rebel.  Thanks.  I am a regular reader.
