Out Back: Succulent Chandelier

A few years back I hung a candle chandelier over my two-fer table on the back deck. At first I wanted to paint it but as it got rusty, the aged look grew on me. All that was lovely but as it turns out, I don't have the kind of lifestyle that requires candle light very often - I almost never lit those candles. Never a fan of purely decorative items, I wanted to put the chandy to better use.

SucculentChandelier

Succulents (the best friends of a black thumbed gardener like me) to the resuce. I can't take any credit for this idea as I saw it done in a garden center years ago but it suddenly popped into my mind as a fix to my problem this weekend.

I have no idea if this idea will work or I'll end up with a bunch of succulent skeletons to show for it but for now, I'm loving it.

For those natural born gardeners out there - whats your verdict? Will they grow or have I sentenced these poor innocent plants to death?

In other backyard news, the upside down tomato planters seem to be bearing some fruit. I won't be opening a roadside stand anytime soon with the bounty but I'm excited to taste them (if the wily city squirrels don't get to them first!)

  2. Hey now, that is an awesome idea! I've never seen anything like it. I'm not terribly familiar with succulents, but the once concern that I see would be that they have enough soil to properly root and get nutrients. Whether or not it lasts a long time, it sure looks great!

  4. I love it! I think they should do well in your chandelier. If they don't you could try attaching some small glass shades. That would give them more soil to grow in.

Country squirrels love tomatoes too. I know your pain. Imagine country squirrels rolling canteloupe & watermelon out of the garden! That's what they do at my house. They love fruit & 'steal' it any time they can get by with it. lol

This is a great idea! If the succulents don't end up surviving maybe try moss or air plants.

This is such a phenomenal idea! How much was the whole project...I'm intrigued! How long did the whole project take?

I met a gentleman at our local farmers market who sells succulents.  He says they grow without much care.  I then proceeded to purchase a multitude of succulents from him for our sunroom!  I think this is a great idea!  I have an old light fixture that I have been dragging around for years, and may give this a try!  Thanks for the inspiration!

  10. It didn't take very long - less than a half hour. I purchased 2 kinds of plants at a nursery and already had a third growing in a container but I didn't bother to shop around. I don't remember the pricing but I probably spent about $35. You could get better pricing online but I didn't want to wait.

Love it!  I hope it does well for you.  My mom gave me a bunch of hens and chicks yesterday.  I'm still figuring out what to do with them.  Your upside down planters are looking great!

  12. Gorgeous!  The biggest danger would be over-watering, which is the culprit in most plant murders.   These remind me of ice plant that grows like a weed in Southern California (even along the freeway with no care).  If they are like ice plant, they like sandy, well-drained soil,  lots of sunshine, and infrequent deep watering- like regular rain.  Since you don't have a way for those individual holders to drain, I'd just do a light spray-like rain- with the hose once in awhile, but not often.  Ironically, the less attention you give them probably the better they will do.  Good luck!

Succulents are the only thing that I dont manage to kill so I think yours will be safe. They dont need much soil or water or love. Yep they'll be right mate!

I wouldn't be able to wait that long either if I purchase them online! Definitely going to hunt for a thrifty chandelier to do this project this weekend!
