In the Nursery: Book Ledges + Crib

For those of you who asked that I keep you apprised of nursery progress, you are probably pretty sick of hearing about it by now but its too late! I'm on a roll.  I have my to-do list and I'm checking things off!  Hooray.

The book ledges are up!  I took the advice of some very smart readers and purchased these ready made ones from Ikea and simply cut to size.  Naturally my studs were in random places on the wall so I had to make some fresh holes but it was easy enough.  (I used some white round stickers to hide them all.)  So yea for that being done! I debated about adding another ledge under the last one but I think this will look right once I have more books.
You woke me for what?Stokke Sleepi Bassinet
And in other much more exciting news, baby's crib arrived!  So excited.  It's the Stokke Sleepi Bassinet and Crib System from Wayfair.  I just adore its oval shape and it wheels easily from our bedroom to nursery. Double yeah.

As you can tell, Big Cat is substantially less excited about the developments although he did enjoy a long (but rudely interupted!) snooze on the box.

The one problem is that the bedding options are a little more limited but I think I'm going to TRY to make some fitted sheets and a crib skirt myself.  If all fails, I'll turn to etsy.

  2. Love the book ledges!
And I think you should sew the bedding yourself, that way it fill fit perfectly & will be something special as well.

And, oh my goodness. That "Big Cat" looks so sweet! :3

  5. I love how you can see the covers of the books, rather than sticking them in a bookshelf.

  6. Beautiful wall color with all the crispy white trim and shelving.  It looks so clean and elegant.

Speaking as someone who remade the bedding for an old moses basket by herself, don't try to make a fitted sheet by just elasticizing the outer edge of an oval 6" larger than your mattress.  It works for mitered rectangles, but it just makes ovals all puckery.  Darn.  But once I cut a perfect-sized oval (the size of the mattress plus seam allowance) and sewed a a perfect-sized strip to the outer edge (the depth of my mattress plus 3"), I threw together 4 fitted sheets in under two hours.  Definitely worth it for the customization factor.  And a crib skirt should be a snap.

  11. Love the white shelves against the dark blue wall. I have the same shelves and we (baby and I) love it... I also wasn't sure whether to add another ledge near the bottom and I went ahead and did it, and I'm glad I did because my girl loves to pull up on it and choose her own books to read (or dump them on the floor, what fun!) so that's something to think about! Looking good so far :)

LOVE the shelves. They look awesome. And you'll probably thank yourself later for not adding a lower shelf. Once the little one gets older, she could easily reach it. This way, you don't have to worry too much about what's on the shelves.

  14. Love those ledges. We have them above the couch to display our framed photos = no holes in walls and no crooked frames. We also built a bookshelf for our daughter's room that allows for book display - they look so pretty with their covers showing that i find it a shame to put them in a regular bookcase.
It all seems to be coming together nicely.

As a new Aunt who helped my sister out for several weeks, make sure you have A LOT of sheets, otherwise you will be doing laundry all the time. We changed sheets almost every other day because of accidents and normal baby stuff.

Can't wait to see the reveal!  We read that Olivia book to my daughter every single day, and she was able to recite it before she could read.  So sweet!

  19. Not sure if you can get the book 'Where's the green sheep'by Australian author Mem Fox to add to your book collection. I've read it to both of my children and it is adorable.

I also got the Stokke and while I loved the bed, I was super disappointed when I went looking for bedding.  I ended up just buying a bunch of fitted oval bottom sheets in nice organic cotton and splurging on some beautiful fabric for a skirt and bumper and blanket (that we used when my daughter was older and in the bigger sized bed.) I would recommend sewing the skirt a bit shorter than you want it to make sure it doesn't get stuck in teh wheels when you roll the bed around. I had trouble with this and ended up totally resewing the skirt after about 6 months. I I would also double check that the person doing the sewing has done it before for this type of bed because I would that it was a bit harder to get everything just right and attached well compared to when I did it for a regular crib.

  21. Thanks for the tip on the skirt. I wouldn't have really thought about the wheels!

  22. Its funny you said that because I heard that there is no way around doing laundry all the time anyway so not to get too many sheets. I guess it depends on how much laundry I end up doing anyway.

  23. Yes, thats what I was thinking. Also considering building/buying a little toy chest for this corner so I figure not having the ledge will make that easier as well.

  24. Im debating adding a storage bench/toy box under the ledges so I think Ill leave them as 5 for now. But I can always add another one easily by running to Ikea :)

Love the nursery progress posts, keep'em coming! Shelves are lovely & even have a sort of built-in look to them, the way you fit them to that wall.

And that crib!! Coolest basinett/crib/toddler bed system I've ever seen!!!!  It even converts to a daybed & then chairs?! Talk about getting your money's worth.

    xoxo

  26. Good point. Ive seen the directions both ways and the big oval directions didn't make much sense. Ill go straight to the oval+strip option.

  27. Looking awesome! We almost went with the same crib but had such a frustrating time sourcing it in the wood tone I wanted here in Japan, grr! It all worked out though but love your pick. Can't wait to see those shelves filled up! Ann thesewallsofwhite.blogspot

Yay for buying the Stokke Sleepi set. I have the same set for my son and let me tell you, the convenience is unparallelled. He fit in the bassinet until he was around 4 or 5 months old. Every morning, we would wheel the bassinet out of our room to the living room for naps, and then back to our bedroom for sleeping at night. This way, he gets used to sleeping in his crib from day 1 (unless you are planning to use a sidecar for co-sleeping). The choices for sheet fabric aren't great, and the Stokke brand ones are pricey, but I purchased some used ones from a seller on Craigslist and then paid an Etsy seller to custom create ones from fabric I chose. Don't spend the money to get the fancy Stokke bumpers yet......if you can, purchase the "breathable bumpers" for the first year, since regular bumpers can lead to suffocation. Once they are a year old, switch to regular bumpers.....

I am really excited to see the rest of your nursery choices!

This nursery is going to be one of my favorites ever, Stefanie. The book shelves look great. I think it will look right (as you said...I think they look great as it is!) when the books are on, and your baby girl won't be able to scale it like a ladder with a lower shelf. Love how you arranged the books facing out. Your crib is awesome and brilliant!

...and I'm sure your custom bedding will be beautiful.

  31. I wont be buying bumpers at all (unless I find the baby really rams her head into the bars and then Ill worry about it when the time comes). Skipping them seems like an easy way to save money since they dont seem necessary.

Do you remember who on etsy you ordered from? Im going to try to DIY but it would be handy to have a backup.

    Hi Stefanie,

The custom Stokke sheets were from this seller on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/55589473/custom-stokke-fitted-crib-sheet-you?ref=usr_faveitems

We didnt plan to buy bumpers either, until he started rolling around in his crib and knocking his head on the bars and sticking his feet through them. Then, when he started crawling, it got worse, so we bought the breathable bumpers (around $25 online from Target or Amazon). We will change over to regular bumpers once he is at least a year old most likely since he's recently decided to pull the breathable bumpers down (they attach mostly with velcro and ties).

    Sigh. Best laid plans.......
