Play with your food: Carve a Shark Watermelon

I'm not sure how to explain how I've carved pumpkins every October (despite never eating the insides) but have never carved a single watermelon despite eating plenty.  A new era has dawned in the fruit carving annals.

Dun dun dun dun.

Ok, so maybe my version looks more like a piranha than a shark but it was still a big winner at a BBQ this weekend. Jokes aside, this was super easy and fun so I'll be doing it again for sure.  Definitely something a little bit different than your usual bottle of wine (although I certainly think this would be just as much of a winner with some alcohol infused fruit inside).  All you need is a shallow dish, one cherry, a few toothpicks, a sharp knife and a watermelon.

Tutorial on how to carve a shark watermelon can be found here although I'm not entirely sure why watermelons need a promotion board.

  1. Years ago I use to make a watermelon basket, handle and all. It took hours because I also made watermelon balls along with other fruits added. It was a hit every time with there being none left over.

    1. I seem to have an issue making melon balls. It should be so simple yet I never get those perfect little balls out of it.

  2. How have I missed this? It seems so obvious once you show me but I CAN'T believe it never occurred to me to carve them. I shall proceed to go through the supermarket and judge the carving potential of all the foods.

    1. I'm right there with you. I had seen the watermelon fruit basket at some holiday party I'm sure but it never occurred to me to carve it like a pumpkin. So many ideas!

  3. Haha, that website is horrifying!

Kudos on your version! I'm sure it was a big hit :-) I've always wanted to take a fruit-sculpting class...

    2. A fancy ex-co-worker hired someone to teach her guests at her bridal shower a few years ago and I always thought it sounded like a great idea. Just did some googling and this came up in Coney Island:

$200 is a little steep (but it is 4 hrs!), especially when Sur La Table in Hell's Kitchen does basic knife classes for only $59 (but it doesn't say anything about fruit-sculting)

I think I might actually check out SLT first and see if I should up the ante and do the fruit-sculpting! This might be my new parlor trick for cocktail parties!

    4. Wow I'm shocked this is a thing but I guess caterers have to learn how to do this somewhere, right? I think I have to find a friend to drag with me.

    2. No, I just saw it on Pinterest and figured I could wing it! Maybe with Halloween fast approaching, I should though!
