The Best Kitchen Cabinet Hardware for White Kitchens {An Inexpert Guide}

You would think that after renovating a few kitchens, I would be able to pick out the cabinet hardware in a flash.  Nope!  Despite being very familiar with nearly all of the options on the market and spending countless hours mentally debating the pros and cons of each, I still start the process all over again each time.  As much as I love design, hardware selection isn't a favorite so for those of you who are not a gluttons for punishment, I hope this list can save you a little time.

The choices can be overwhelming but I find it helps if you let the personality of your kitchen (or the personality you want it to have) guide your choice.  Without further a do, a few favorites for white kitchens ...

Stainless Steel Straight Pull from D. Lawless Hardware or MyKnobs
Square Crystal Knob from House of Antique Hardware or Hayneedle
Martha Stewart Channel Pull from Home Depot
Cut Green Glass Knob from D. Lawless Hardware or Restoration Hardware, or House of Antique Hardware
Window Sash Style from House of Antique Hardware or Restoration Hardware
Finger Pull Drawer Pull from Schoolhouse Electric or Lee Valley or Rejuvenation

So there you have it - the cliff notes of my time spent scouring for favorite kitchen hardware.   Some other tips:

  • As you can see, similar versions are often found at multiple stores so shopping around is worth it.
  • Most stores run various online coupons on occasion so waiting for a good one can save a lot.
  • Scale matters - measure carefully ahead of time or order some samples before going wild.
  • If mixing knobs + pulls, its best to use a plain knob/pull to compliment a more elaborate partner.
  • Mixed metals in the kitchen is beautiful (for example: stainless fridge, polished nickel hardware, brass pendants) but mixing metals in the small hardware doesn't work as easily.

I know I'm not the only one that has spent too much time shopping for hardware.  What are you favorites? Any tips to add?

  1. Good morning Stephanie,
Thanks to a water leak under the Pergo floor we did a complete kitchen makeover last December - no we aren't crazy (checking the line from the frige to under the sink is now a 1st of the month item along with flea meds, a/c filter change).
There are 66 white cabinet doors and drawers in my kitchen. Yes - 66. Because I thought they would totally clutter the look I settled on plain white porcelain knobs. There was a crystal knob similar to the one you showed that caught my eye. For a while it seemed the hardware was going to be more costly than the cabinetry!

    1. Its insane how much these little expenses add up! I did find a piece of hardware that I absolutely loved but when I saw the price ($75/each) I immediately removed it from my screen and tried to erase it from my mind. It would have literally cost more than the cabinets :)

  2. I used the Martha Stewart pulls in our new kitchen! Yes!

  3. No, you aren't alone in this. My husband & I spent too many hours trying to pick one set of knobs & pulls when we were doing our kitchen remodel when I was 9 months pregnant and had a makeshift kitchen in the nursery and the garage (yeah, we are crazy like that!). Anywhoo, we ended up picking something really understated and we realized that after 6 months in this new kitchen we love the understated options that we picked more than the fancier (& expensive to boot!) ones that we liked previously.

  5. Ive found that the most challenging is finding a knob and handle to go together. We have picked a "pretty vintage" knob for our cabinets. (anthro bubble glass in clear). But I cant figure out what pulls to use for our drawers... any tips... or suggestions???

    1. The bubble glass knob is a great looking one. (I heart anthro but I've heard some bad things about the resilency of their knobs for high use knobs so I don't usually recommend for kitchens. Im sure you have read the reviews already - just word to the wise.)

If I recall the metal base isn't quite brushed nor shiny so you wont be able to find an exact match but something simple like Restoration Hardwares Ephram or Adeline should work. Or maybe the Martha Stewart Bdford pull? I'd try to stick to something in a simple classic shape that doesn't draw too much attention but still works with vibe of the knob. Hope that helps! Let me know how it turns out.

    2. Oh boy, I haven't heard this. We just ordered our new knobs from Anthro this week (arriving tomorrow). Ours are solid iron pulls though, maybe those will be sturdier? They better be for the price!

Anyway, beautiful choices. I guess I'm the only one that actually enjoys hardware shopping?

  6. I've long been admiring the Schaub & Company Northport pulls in polished nickel- the ones with the more rounded profile. I'd love to replace the brushed nickel in my current kitchen; however, I haven't priced them out, but I have a feeling the price might take them off my list. I really like that Martha Stewart Channel Pull. It looks a lot like the Atlas Hardware Sutton Pulls at a much better price point! Yes, I'm a hardware geek!

    1. The Martha Stewart Channel pull gets the award for most affordable! At $2/each they are pretty hard to beat and they look great in person too.

  7. Beautiful options and perfectly timed post. Thank you! Now if you could please do my homework on researching compatible/complimentary light fixtures for kitchen and breakfast area, that would be great!Going with polished nickel and pretty sold on using industrial style pendants over the large island but really struggling with finding something for the breakfast/eating area. Scouring through your site and getting tons of ideas from all your beautiful renovation projects. Thank you for the inspiration!

    1. Thanks Nina. I love the light fixture I have already for my kitchen so Im not shopping for one of those for my place but happy to opine on yours. If you want to send me a photo of your space, I could give it a try.

PS: you should be aware that I'm a big fan of mixing metals so be warned!

  9. I always thought my dream kitchen would have cup pulls. Are they not a good idea, or just not your style?

    1. I like cup pulls too but I tend to think they look best on flat fronted inset drawers only. Since those appear in so few kitchens, I don't usually recommend them. I've seen them installed on other styles of cabinet but they always seem a tiny bit awkward when surrounded by trim to my eye. But that is just my opinion.
