Here they actually sell the "toffee" (caramel) condensed milk ready made. So cool. Kritincita most amazed about it having to boil that long, but yes you have to. If you're familiar with a pressure cooker, it can be done faster but make sure it won't boil dry. Yes, it was sweetened condensed. No, it wasn't the generic. The only thing I can think of that I did different from the recipe was that I cooked two cans at once. Maybe I should have gone longer than 2.5 hours for two cans?
It was in a caramel-like consistency when I poured it from the can. Is it usually thicker?
I think I might re-cook the second can a little longer and see if that helps.
Suggestions are welcome. Simple to make with a box of Nilla wafers (or mini Nilla wafers) and a few bags of Brachs Peppermint patties (or mini York Peppermint patties) Assemble the "burgers" by putting a small dab of yellow frosting on the bottom nilla wafers then put one peppermint pattie on each. Frost the top ones with just a little red and green frosting to look like lettuce or pickles and ketchup. I put them on a plate and cover them with a gallon size Ziplock and they are very popular! My only suggestions with this is that if you make your graham cracker crust, don't skimp on the graham crackers and if possible either make your own whipped cream or use Cool Whip, no off brands. Boiling cans of condensed milk is far to time consuming. Empty can contents into a heat proof glass bowl, place into a saucepan of boiling water (Bain marie) ensuring that the water doesn't get into the sauce, then stir until you reach the desired consistency. Takes no more than about 15-20 minutes. Makes a really yummy pie!
