Good Thing Debunked!

Anyone who knows me knows Im a devout Martha Stewart follower. Ive been a fan for a long time but my favorite feature of her magazine is generally their "good things" feature. Those sections always seem to hold the best tips. Cases in point...

Years ago, I remember reading in her mag that hanging a eucalyptus sprig in the shower will give it a sweet smell for a few weeks. I thought it was a great idea but without any sprigs laying around, I stored the idea away. This weekend I finally put it to the test in my own shower.

Well this good thing is a total waste. Even with a good steaming, you can't smell a thing. Maybe if a big bunch was strung up there it would be more pungent but thats not very practical. So a bummer all around. Oh well, live and learn.
Random fact of the day: the string I used to hang the euch was from the very same roll I tied up my giant spiderweb last Halloween. That string has served its duty in countless tasks in the house since. Ive never had nylon string laying around my house before but now I know its a must have. Now thats a good thing!

  2. Thanks for the tip! What I have found though is making bath salts with eucalyptus oil is great for when your sinuses/allergies are acting up. A hot bath with that is a great reliever!

  3. Throw me in as a devout follower of Martha, too [mainly her recipes for me]. Although I am a devoute Marthaite [maybe a name we can attach to all of those who follow? haha], she has let me down a few times in the cooking area. I would have guessed that the shower idea would have had some merit behind it, but thanks for testing it out for us! Would have been nice had it worked. :)

  4. I love Martha and have been reading her magazine since I was 16- and yes my friends made fun of me...well now they are not making fun because they come to me all the time for Martha ideas. I have to say, like you said, some ideas of hers are good, and others are not so good.

  5. LOVE the idea of the secret handshake!! Count me in on it if you come up with one!

Over the years, yes, some "good things" turned out to be GREAT things and others... well...

Maybe Martha's eucalyptus was some fancy "special" kind that is rare and hard to find... :)

I wish her show was like the original ones -- I've never been able to get into the "variety hour" format that she has now. Oh well, wouldn't have time to watch it anyway, so...

Loved the post! No eucalyptus showers for me, I guess.

  6. Too bad the eucalyptus trick didn't work - I was ready to go out and buy some. We have lavender growing in our garden - maybe I'll give that a try.

I love it...I love Martha, but there are times when I just know something that her staff has cooked up just isn't going to work. Guess that's a valid thought.

  8. I don't think what you hung was the type of eucalyptus Martha meant. Here in Southern California, Eucalyptus leaves are narrow and long, and they are very fragrant!

  9. This eucalyptus is very fragrant too - it just doesn't carry via steam. Martha is on the east coast so Im pretty sure she meant this kind if I recall the photo from the magazine correctly but maybe the California version works better for this.

  12. The key is FRESH Eucalyptus! My mom has many a huge, old eucalyptus tree surrounding her house and years ago, when I too saw this 'good thing', tried it with a fresh off the tree bit of eucalyptus. I think if it's fresh the oils are released with the steam right away. If it's old or dried the oils probably dried or something scientific that I have not the capacity for.

Try it next time if you can with a fresh sprig!

  13. This is "fresh" in the sense its not dried but I don't have any euchalyptus tree to pick from. :(

  18. Interesting! I'm Australian, and that doesn't look like any eucalyptus I've ever seen though. Eucalyptus isn't necessarily that pungent unless you crush it - I agree with the comment regarding using a fresh spring, that may help.

  19. LOL-I did the same thing! I tied a fresh branch in there and it didn't do a thing until I munched it up a bit.
