Master Bedroom: Nearly Finished

I'm quite certain that no room has been fretted over more in a single blog then this room. Its been going on for years and it has to stop. But not just yet. That’s because a) I'm nearly finished and I wanted to show you and b) I have a couple of more tweaks to make and could use your input.

So ignoring items b and c for now - here is how she looks. I busted out the fish eye lens so you can see more of the room at once. Take my word for it, the walls don't curve in real life.

As you can see I made a few small adjustments from last week including making a little polkadot pillow for the chair, swapping the painting over the bed for some framed fabric, hiding the white pillowcases underneath the gray.

For those that have asked, here are the details of the various elements.
Wall color: Benjamin Moore Silver Marlin, Flat
Trim: Benjamin Moore Bone White, Semi-gloss
Floors: Original to the house, no stain, high gloss oil based poly
Chandelier: Vintage from Mr. Limestone's parents house
Headboard: Purchased secondhand from a wholesale showroom via Craigslist
Quilt: Rosette by Anthropologie
Square pillows: Dwellstudio Peony Pillow from Target
Dotted pillowcases: Sewn by me, fabric is Midwest Modern by Amy Butler
Rug: Surya, suggested and ordered through the talented Paula Grace
Dresser: Find Furnishings, Brooklyn
Canvas over dresser: Painted by me, based on this vintage photo
Chair: Second hand from ETG, Staten Island
Little pillow on chair: Sewn by me, fabric is Summer Soiree Paula Prass
Both Nightstands: Purchased second hand from Englishtown Antiques
Lamps: Cost Plus (no longer available)
Collage Canvases: Designed by me, printed by Uprinting
Frames over the bed: Ikea, yellow fabric is Chardonnay Home Vicki Payne
Jewelry tree stand: Little Birch by Urban Outfitters
Black hands: Jewelry display from Nile
Small female bust: Ebay
Drapes & Hardware: Purchased at the now defunct Linens and Things but available elsewhere.

If I missed anything, just ask.

Im really happy with how it looks. It has the color scheme, mix of textures, new + old, and personal touches that I wanted. So its nearly there and its certainly good enough to make feel like I accomplished 'finishing' the room.

But is anything ever finished really? There are a couple small things I could use help with. Please feel free to weigh in:

1.
I'd like to replace the fabric in the frames with two of my own photographs. I'm terrible at selecting my own - all I see is what could be improved. Suggestions?
2.
I'd like to replace the photos on the dresser with some of my own photographs as well. See #1.
3.
I'm not sold on the quilt. I think it looks pretty but it doesn't sing to me. What I'd really like is a simple, medium gray comforter (NO DUVET COVERS EVER!!) but I can't find that for the life of me. Have you seen a gray comforter?
4.
Not sure if I should paint the nightstand on the left to match the gray on the right. On the one hand, it works well with the wood on the chair legs. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind a bit more symmetry on this wall.

Hmmmmph.

It looks so nice. I love the all of the gray with the pop of the yellow. I really need some inspiration but it's hard when renting. I don't know where to start!

    ReplyDelete
  2. I love the comforter. I was wondering if it would have the same 'pop' and definition if I ordered the black? I wish it came in more colors. Let me know....I love the room. I love gray and wanted to do it in our master but it doesn't go with the carpet.

  3. This room is so amazing and beautiul! I immediately noticed that you had changed the chair,I like this one so much better!

I would say paint the nightstand. I just love the way the first one you did looks :).

  4. I really love the combo of gray and yellow. Your bedroom is lovely and I do think I might have to get some of those hands for my vanity.

  5. First of all... I am drooling and envious over this room. Have been since I found your blog a couple weeks ago. I want a pretty bedroom too! :D As far as the things you wanted opinions on, I think the framed fabric above the bed is perfect. No photos are ever going to replace that look. I love the bedspread; wouldn't think of changing it myself. And if you already have the paint to make the nightstands match, I would. The only thing that bugs me about this room is that the bed doesn't seem to be centered with the fireplace. Now that I see where the door is, I see that might be impossible, but that would drive me nuts in my house.

  6. What a perfect room. I can only dream!

I think the bedspread is gorgeous, and unique like the rest of the room. I would paint the nightstand because I have a symmetrical mind. About the photos--it seems like we are all too critical on ourselves and I'm sure so pretty pictures you picked our would be perfect and to anyone else they would be gorgeous. But if you are always going to be critical of them maybe just leave the fabric? Anyway, just wanted to say this is an amazing room and I wish I could have it. :)

  7. I love it! I would have never thought to put all of that together. It's so great that you have a unique vision and the ability to pull it off.

  8. I would definitely say paint the other night stand. I'm a sucker for symmetry.

  9. I feel inadaquate to comment on your blog because I don't know much about decorating but I cannot NOT comment on your bedroom. It is simply stunning.

  10. What a lovely, calm bedroom! In my opinion, you should paint the nightstand to match. I found it a little distracting. But it's your house, so do what you like!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Really like the room but the grey cover on the bed just leaps out of the picture and i find it rather distracting. I would be inclined to paint the 2nd bedside table but maybe thats just me finding symmetry easier on the eye.

  13. I love how all that looks together and I love the chair... the pillow really makes it. I would paint the nightstand too. I am not matchy matchy really, but I do think that sometimes it just brings it all together. Great job, you are quite inspiring. Your spaces are clean and classic, but never boring.

  14. Your room is such a lovely little haven! :) So calm. I love it!

Re: #4, if it were my I'd paint the nighstands the same color. And I have to ask, in all good fun, what's up with the duvet hate? :P I'm always curious about this because almost everyone I've talked to about duvets has extreme feelings toward them. Me? I will NEVER use anything other than a duvet on my beds, but I know plenty of people who will never use anything but a comforter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love love love what you've done with the room. It's been so inspiring to see your decision making process. The room looked nice to begin with, but the changes are amazing. And that yellow chair is so perfect!

Per your request #3: I love your new bedspread, but if you want something more simple, have you thought about quilts or coverlets? For example: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Half-inch-Vertical-Stitch-3-piece-Coverlet-Set/4263024/product.html

If it's something you might like, Overstock has a new selection almost daily. We have a similar quilt, and while it still needs another blanket underneath, it's better (for us) than a duvet.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's looking great. The 'Rosette' photographs beautifully, wish it was singing to you in real life! I'd def. paint the nightstand. not even and exact match, just ditch the stained look.
And I know you didn't ask, but I'd scooch the framed fabric together so that they're maybe 3" apart. And maybe, just maybe another pop of yellow on that sweet dresser from FIND.

That probably didn't help you. I'm sorry!

  17. mind you, i'm in dubai, but I saw a grey quilt at ikea for 70.00. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00162648 it was really simple and pretty. the room looks beautiful! i would paint the nightstand too. only bc it looks almost identical. if they were different shapes, it wouldn't be as obvious. good luck!

  18. Your bedroom blows me away. It's so fantastic. If I visited or lived in your home I doubt I'd ever want to leave that room. I love all the colors together too. I was worried in our home (rental) that a gray and yellow color scheme wouldn't work with brown wood floors but you've proved me wrong! I love it! Great work!

  21. I'd also like to know whats up with the duvet hate?! I tend to back and forth, but just love my down comforter so much I don't think I could ever go back! I think you should paint the other nightstand, the first one you did looks so great!

This room is beautiful! I love that you did so much of the artwork yourself, it makes it so much more personal...and its beautiful!

  22. Love the room! REferring to where you wrote: "What I'd really like is a simple, medium gray comforter (NO DUVET COVERS EVER!!)" - I need to ask why? I am in the process of buying bedding and am wondering if there are negatives about duvet covers I do not know of. I just brought home a new duvet cover, after spending 30 minutes in the store mulling over whether to get the duvet cover or the comforter in the same pattern. Please share your thoughts!

Well it looks stunning to me! The yellow chair makes the whole room and your headboard is to die for! Question - where did you get the hardware for the window treatments? I have a bay window in my living room, and I would like to hang four panels just like you did, but I'm having a hard time finding hardware that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks!

    Beautiful! : )

I would paint the nightstand and I personally love the framed fabric, but your photos are beautiful as well. I'm no help on the bedspread either, it looks great too. Can't wait to see your final tweaks, I'm sure your vision will be even more fantastic than it is right now! : )

  27. I have been in love with the Rosette comforter for years...I would try to wander past it as often as possible when I worked at Anthro.

But, here is another grey quilt that I like:

    http://www.target.com/DwellStudio-Target-Charcoal-Circle-Coverlet/dp/B001GI3PU2/ref=sc_qi_collection_item_1?ie=UTF8&altString=DwellStudio%26reg%3B%20for%20Target%26reg%3B%20Charcoal%20Circle%20Coverlet

    And it's on clearance!

    ReplyDelete
  28. It looks great! I really love the new yellow chair, to be honest I was never a huge fan of the bright white slipper chair. I really like the fabric above the bed and I don't think you should replace them with photos-- I'd worry that it would be too busy. You have a lot of texture on that wall between the comforter and the tufted headboard, and I think the framed fabric adds some needed simplicity. But go for it over the dresser! As for the quilt, I DO like it, but I'm wondering if maybe you can just make the bed differently so that it doesn't cover the whole thing? I think the problem isn't the quilt itself, but maybe that there's too much of it.

Sounds like I'm with everyone else when I say paint the nightstand! I hear what you're screaming about the chair legs, but I think it would look awesome to have the nightstands match. And if the chair legs bother you (even though I think they look nice with the floor inlay), you could give them a matching paintjob as well?

And I'm wondering too-- what's the matter with duvet covers? If you're afraid of the whole stuffing-the-comforter-back-in saga, Benita over at Chez Larsson did a nice post about how to make that super quick and painless. I like that I can wash my duvet every few weeks, personally, and switch them often because they fold up nice and small. I have three that I circulate, it's great for a change-junkie.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, the room is not laid out symetrically - the fireplace isn't centered with the bed, the chandelier doesn't hang over the bed. Its just not a symetrical room. Short of ripping out the fireplace (which I would never do) I deal with it.

On the topic of duvets - I end up spending way too much time trying to get the duvet + cover just so and I just decided (after many years of having duvets and trying it all) I was not going to spend another minute of my life wrestling my own bedding. Some people say they tried this trick or that tip and it works for them but take my word, I've tried them all. We must be especially violent sleepers or something.

As for the fabric over the bed. I think it looks nice but I would just prefer something more personal. I like reminders of our adventures and I really dont have them anywhere else. The mattes are large enough that I dont think it would create any issues with being too much.

  32. as soon as i saw these new pics i thought 'aha! that's what you needed' the black frames totally grounds the space. that is what you were missing before (in my eyes). perfect perfect.

i also agree with you about the duvet cover- to me, it's the only thing thats not quite working. sorry - i don't have any solutions but i'm sure other commenters will.

    fantastic job!

(oh & yes, i think you should paint the other night table)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would paint both nightstands a different color! Though I like the stained one with your gorgeous floors, I understand the want for them to be the same. I think a different color than grey would be good to put a little more of a punch into the sea of greys/neutrals... Or maybe just a darker grey? Or if you could strip the painted one and stain it to match the other...

  34. Drasylve12:46 PM

The room is gorgeous and I absolutely love the bedspread! I would like to see the larger gray nightstand on the other side of the bed, because it moves the bed from the door. I think that would help with the symmetry, by linking the dresser and nightstand diagonally. However, it looks like you are not quite centered on the fireplace and it may move you farther out of center, so that may bother the eye too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Beautiful and FAST!
I know you feel it's taking some time, but we've been in our new master for 18 years now, and it's NEVER been finished---actually---it's never been STARTED!!
You know, the cobbler's barefoot children, that's the story of our home---always for others, rarely for self...
    Sorry, I digressed.
Paint the bed side table. Paint it to match the other or paint it a darker gray.
Don't over think. Don't get too serious.

  36. I normally dont mind mixing the paint tones and whatnot, but I think it would look more finished to have the other nightstand painted. It would stand out a little less I think.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I adore yellow and grey when they are paired together, so naturally I love what you have done here. I only have two comments: I would leave the framed fabric as is because the extra punch of yellow above the bed really ties everything together. Or... replace them with photos that have a good amount of yellow. Also, I would say paint the night stands the same color. It might help anchor the room to paint them a charcoal grey or black; from the pictures the details on the side of the headboard get lost because the right night stand lacks contrast.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow - your room looks gorgeous - just enjoy!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I LOVE the fabric in the frames above the bed- nice pop of color to tie in the yellow bedding with the rest of the room.

Also, I think the grey bedding just looks a little "flat," not "fluffy" enough on there. Maybe that's it. I like the design of it, but wish it looked more full/luxurious.

Such a great job though, everything is wonderful!

First, I love the blog. This is my first comment. The bedroom is great! My two cents - I would paint the end table for symmetry on the wall with the bed. And, I love the framed fabric - I would actually keep that - it really brings in the yellow....

    ReplyDelete
  42. Paint the other nightstand, def. keep the quilt. I love it!

  43. Anonymous3:05 PM

First of all, I think the room looks beautiful! I know you don't like the quilt, but I think it is gorgeous! Why, may I ask, don't you like duvet covers?

As for the night stand, I think you should paint it to match the other one. It would create a more cohesive and finished look. The legs on the chair can stand on their own. Especially since the hardwood floors are in the same tone.

As for the pictures, I am at a loss. Your work is so beautiful and you have such a wonderful photographic eye. The good thing is you can try any combo of pics and keep trying them out until you decide which ones look the best. Even then you can change them up whenever you wish since you are the artist!

    Have a great day!

  44. I may be the odd one out here. I would not paint the nightstand. I LOVE an evolved room. I actually make a point NOT to have things match, just "go". I think the room will stand the test of time better if you embrace the varying finishes. It is gorgeous as is.

Hi, The room is credit to your skills... It is truly beautiful!!!

Is there any way you could simply swap the night stands? I think the wood needs to stay because then you have the wood in the floor, chair and night stand... I alway like to have an odd number, not sure why though...

I think the little wood table would always look out proportion with the other night stand and the dresser if it was painted...

  59. it looks so elegant and comfortable.

love the gray bedspread... it adds a touch of unusual and texture.

the yellow spots make a great compliment to the gray.

you could make a plain gray cover... its essentially a big pillow.

i would refinish the other side table to match... it looks a little odd being the only wood besides the floor.

one question -= where is your everyday clutter? ;o

  60. Anonymous7:48 PM

Actually I wouldn't paint the nite stand. I love how the wood gives contrast to the more muted colors in the room. I usually like symmetry as well but lately I like things that go against the grain in decorating. I think I read too many blogs.

  64. I love this room. I'm currently trying to work some gray into my taupe/white/chocolate brown bedroom (I know, totally wild and crazy, right?), so your sources and your commenters' suggestions are really helpful to me. At the moment, I'm leaning toward a textured gray coverlet or quilt folded at the foot of the bed on top of a smoother/plainer duvet cover. I think the Anthropologie quilt would look incredible folded at the foot, but that's probably not super functional for you (especially given the dearth of good plain gray comforter options).

I vote for painting the other nightstand and I second the suggestion to scoot the frames over the bed a little closer together. When you asked about photographs I immediately thought of the ones you posted in January from your trip to the Brooklyn Flea. I especially like the 4th (wide view of ceiling), 5th (closer of arch/light), and 7th (lamp & mosaic) - there's a nice golden touch in all of those images. Good luck!!

Quick question about the wall and trim colors. I know you said they were the same, just different finishes (flat and semi-gloss), but they look so different to me - walls a beautiful blue-green and the trim a creamy white or off-white. Are they really both the same color? Just hard for me to imagine such a contrast just from the finishes. Actually, I'm thrilled you told us the wall colors because we're in the middle of redoing our bedroom and I'm still picking paint colors. I'm looking for a pretty blue-green and I really like your walls! Actually, the room is gorgeous!!! (I did like the paintings over your bed - both of them together were really great.)

  80. Hi Stefanie,

My, my such a fret! Your room is beautiful, You know I think the nightstands should be the same color. The bedspread is not singing to me either. I think one with less textured pattern will look wonderful! Just find some fabric you love and sew hems on it ~ instant bedspread. At a fabric store, you will have mountains of choices vs. ready made ones. Since you have out the machine already..... On the photographs, can you narrow them down and post them so we can see or is there a place for me to go?? I think you should narrow then down though. Busy lady! Come join Timeless Tuesday ~ fretting over a project is about as timeless as you can get :)

This looks gorgeous! I've loved finding your blog and perusing your archives. It's incredible to see your progress!

I actually like the warmer wood tone of the nightstand and the chair legs. I'd say leave them be, but find something in a similar tone to mix into your vignette on the dresser. Perhaps a wood frame? Or a color photo of your cat amongst the black and white imagery? :)

  83. Your bedroom looks great. I love the dresser you chose and mentioned it on a post I did today on bun feet.

Wow! This is absolutely stunning! Your home is so glamorous. I've been drooling over your photos since I stumbled on your blog yesterday. I wish I had the talent to refurbish a historic property as you have. And your kitchen!! Swoon!

  85. I just love your room!! I just recently bought that EXACT same girl bust at a local resale shop....curious what you paid on ebay, I paid $5.99 for mine, they had a boy too, but I only bought the girl.

  86. It looks AMAZING! And guessing from the architectual design of the room, I'm guessing you live in San Francisco. I miss my city!

  87. Tidy - I don't remember exactly how much I spent...less than $10 Im sure. I have another one just like her that I got for a dollar but when I wanted another one, it cost more b/c it had to be shipped. I'd love a much larger bust but I can't find those at all.

  88. Hi Mrs. Limestone!
I am LOVING seeing this room come together, as I've been doing our master in this same color scheme... I even bought that same Target pillow a couple months ago! I've been stalking that Amy Butler fabric, too, and also found this Waverly line... https://www.fabric.com/CategoryDetail.aspx?CategoryID=553a7741-93ef-48db-bed9-baa6515423db (I actually really love the Buzzing About and Cross Section ones!) What if you just made something? (or had it made?) West Elm did have some great options for simple gray coverlets in the last catalog!

  89. so gorgeous! love that colour palette - especially the pops of yellow! i'd prob paint the other dresser the pale grey too and I think a really nice neautral-coloured cable-knit blanket would look nice on the bed. and i'd like to steal that bedroom chair too please!

  91. I was browsing the Company Store's comforter sale today (on through 2/10) and saw a couple of possibilities. Not sure if the pewter color is too dark for you, but thought I'd mention it since I've always been really happy with the quality of TCS products. You can choose your level of warmth and whether you want down or down alternative (we've always gone with the Primaloft down alternative b/c of allergies).

  92. beautiful furniture :) I like your bed too

  93. The nightstands would be nice painted the same color. The yellow chair by the canvas collages is perfect. It really pops there and the pillow is a nice touch. I love the rosette quilt! It's a textural touch among all the smooth surfaces. I am wishing it was in a gold or a dusty sage green for our bedroom!! Is your cat allowed on the bed? Does the cat do anything to the quilt rosettes? My cats are very well-behaved but they do like to attack things. I'd sew a quilt with rosettes but those rosettes look "attack-able."

  95. I think the space is lovely -- wouldn't change any of it. Here's a source for some grey comforters for you to check out. Disregard if you're already aware of it. Please keep sharing your talent!!! http://www.beddingenvy.com/search/label/Gray

Have you seen the new Dwell bedding?! The peacocks?! I bet either the gray version or the yellow version would look awesome with everything. They both have your yellow and your turquoise from your office! Just a thought. :) I still am in love with your headboard!

  97. I love the gray antrho quilt! It looks so sumptuous and snuggly. We, too, have a similar bedroom palette and had a horrible time finding bedding we loved. (You said it, no duvets, EVER!) In the end we went with the silvery linen quilt from Serena and Lily (Sorry, I can't get the link to post. It's at serenaandlily.com under "quilts"-- it's the hand tufted quilt in oyster linen.) It really is a very grayed linen IRL-- and it looks perfect with the warm blues and grays. Don't know if it would work with the beautiful upholstery of your headboard, but thought I'd pass it along just in case.

    Best,
    Kim

You have inspired me to finally do something with my enormous, newly laquered frame! I have debated whether or not to mirror it...Nope! I'm going to hang it and place my flatscreen in it as well!Love Love Love that idea!Thank you, and when I tackle it, I will be sure to give you kudos on my blog..

  102. Found your site @ Hooked on Houses. Your bed spread was recenlty shown in Country Living magazine in Tony Shalhoub's house. They have it white. While it's pretty, it's a little too bland for me. Have you ever looked at the quilts from LL Bean? They have some pretty ones in muted colors, but they may be too rustic for your room. I think something in light blues would be pretty there. I'd also agree about painting the table to match so it doesn't pop out as being so different. Beautiful room. If I were as talented as you are, I would use my own work to personalize it more.

Hi - I was wondering...why No Duvet Covers, ever? I am in the process of looking for a comforter/duvet cover - I value your opinion and was wondering why not duvet cover. I love your house...you give me inspiration.

  107. Hi! I thought of you yesterday, I was buying fabric for my master bedrooms windows and it has some pops of yellow. I wasn't sure if I could pull it off and then I remembered how wonderful it looked it your room so I'm going to give it a try. :) have a great weekend!

  108. I'm wondering... Is your T.V. wired through the wall? Do you have cable on this T.V. and if so where do you keep all of that kinda stuff? Mine is wired to our basement, but we still have an ugly cable box, and some ugly wires (from the cable box) in view! Any tips?!

  109. Target did a smart thing when they made those lovely pillows, I have seen them so many places and they work with so many different combinations! So very beautiful. That chair in the corner is my dream chair! LOVE IT!

  112. This is very late, but did you ever find a gray comforter? I just found your site and I love this room! I have bookmarked it as inspiration. :) Still going through your pages.
Anyway, I have purchased lovely gray comforters at Target (but they were on clearance when I bought them about a month ago). One was striped and another had different tones of gray flowers on a gray background.

No, I never did. The hunt continues forever. I've looked in Target but never found anything that worked (i really just one a solid gray, preferably with some texture in the way its sewn)
