Halloween Decor Reveal: Welcome to the Asylum.

So now you know the concept and seen the invite, of course there had to be some exterior decor to match. (Prior year's themes have been spider infestation, skeleton invasion and freak show). Welcome to our madhouse...

The neighbors and passing kids seem to get a kick out of it so I'm happy. We've even had a few people who sneak in the gate and take photos of themselves with our fine doctor. Hee-hee.

It could use a little more filler in the form of spider webs and rubber rats but I didn't have those handy so I'll add them before Halloween Monday but I think this is pretty creepy as is.

And yes, I'm already mentally working on next years idea.

For that want to know the details:
-I made the visiting hours sign really easily using a large wooden board, spray paint, a hand cut 'H' and some peel and stick letters. I thought I'd have to hand paint it but this was so much quicker and easier. (Subway style posters could easily be made using the same method)
-I purchased the hospital gown and scrubs online but added the 'property of' design using a stencil made with the silhouette die cutting machine.
-The condemned sign and patient files were designed by me but I found the eerie photographs on the always full of inspiration site Graphics Fairy.

  1. I really wish more houses would decorate like this! There's only 1 house on my street that's put some stuff out. Yours looks great!

  17. WOW! Great job! You are so talented. One of my mom's best friends when I was growing up always had 'that house' and we looked forward to it every year - the party, the green steamy punch, seeing which character her son was disguised as in the yard, and of course her elegant procession downstairs at the start of the party for all to see her costume each year. She passed away a long time ago, and I keep hoping one of my friends will decide that they are going to have the Halloween house, but so far no takers. Your friends and neighbors are so lucky!

  18. I had to laugh at your comment about thinking about next year's theme.  I have done the same thing.  You are so creative and such an inspiration.  I wish I could see the house in person, it just looks amazing and I can't wait to see how the inside of the house looks like.  My project for the day is lining my coffins with red satin.

  21. omg that is so creepy!!! you did an amazing job!

  22. We don't do that much with the inside. Because of all the trick or treaters, its definitely more of an outdoor thing.

  23. Stay tuned for tomorrows post - Ill be giving the condemned sign away as a freebie download.

The patient forms are pretty basic - just name, date of birth, date of admittal, treatment, etc.. Its really just filler to make it look official. :)

  26. Wow. I had a Halloween party planned, then had to cancel because my Hunny got a kidney stone! Anywho, you are SO the Queen of Halloween. I'm bowled over again. I'd love it if you would write about where you get your creepy manequins every year . . . do you rent them or own & store them?? Enquiring minds want to know! You're so great.

    Warmly, Michelle

  31. Condemned sign - That is awesome! Do you send press releases to the magazines? They should be constantly hitting you up if they had smarts.

  35. You are A-MAZ-ING!!!!  I LOVE everything you do on your blog and can not wait each Halloween to see what you do!  Can I ask how you get your skeletons to stand up in the windows?

  36. As always, you hit it out of the park on this years Halloween design.  Each year I think you can't top what you did the year before, but somehow you do!  Would you concider sharing your patient files and condemed signs as a download so people like me, who can't figure out this computer stuff to well, could use it.  Thanks!

Just brilliant! I loved last years but this is soooo good! Got a Shutter Island feel. Happy Halloween to you and your family. You are an inspiration. Kind regards Michelle Gregory, England.

  39. Im giving away the condemned sign in todays post so keep an eye out.

  40. Thanks.

The skeletons are hung with fishing wire.

  41. They aren't manequins. The two 'patients' on the ground are armatures with heads and hands purchased at party city. The 'doctor' is one of the skeletons that I ducted tape a scary head to. And of course the skeletons are just the cheap blow mold variety I bought several years ago.

Great job as always.  I love your Halloween spirit!  I'm sure your neighborhood appreciates your passion as well!  It's a nice treat to share that with your neighbors every year.  Happy Halloween!

  44. I follow your blog and absolutely love it! I, however, have some constructive feedback that I hope you won't mind. Your Halloween decor is great but can you stay away from the  so-called "lunatic asylum" wording and depictions. I work with people with mental illnesses and the stigma associated with asylums is very detrimental to those who are ill.
    Thanks!

  45. You truly have the perfect house for outrageous Halloween decor! Looks fabulously spooky. Janell

  46. Terrifying as always! I think this is the creepiest yet, though. Those half-decomposed "bodies" give me a case of the willies! I'm sure your trick or treaters will be sufficiently spooked!
