Be Seated Outside

Moving right along with sprucing up our newly finished deck (see this post for more info), we now have chairs.

Ever since I got the marble bistro table months ago, I had been keeping a glad eye out for chairs that worked with it but weren't too expensive. Didn't have much luck until I found these Martha Stewart red boys at Kmart.
aberdeen collection

I like their unusual shape - something a little bit different than the cast iron chairs that are usually paired with these tables. In a strange fit of decisiveness on my part and willingness to quickly drive to Staten Island on Mr. Limestone's part, we brought them home.

The red made them look a little too much like Santa's sleigh for me. Spraypaint to the rescue.

Much better now.

So now we can sit out there and enjoy the new space.

What's left on the deck to do list? Lets take a look.
1. Plants.
2. Something dramatic hanging over the table.
3. Barbeque.
4. Some fun/whimsical/colorful - not sure what.

What do you think it needs?

That's my favorite set! I, too, have been keeping my eyes on them. On sale yet?

  2. Kmart - who knew? Such cute chairs. Are you planning to put cushions on them? That would be a great place to add color.

  3. Jennifer - they are on sale. I think their original price was a little high for Kmart but the new price is much more reasonable.

L@Journey - Yes, I'm going to make some cushions if I ever get around to getting some sunbrella fabric that I like.

I'm kind of a cyberstalker of your site, my husband and I just bought our own fixer-upper so I've been totally inspired by your whole process here! (ok now that I sound like a creeper lol) I had to comment because I saw this mobile on ohjoy's blog a couple weeks ago and loved it, I think it would be a great whimsical little addition for over the table. Although, its a little pricey, and I'm not sure if it would weather outside, I still had to share!! http://www.bookhou.com/homedecor-flock-mobile.html

Holy crap! K-mart?! Just lovely. And good decision on the black. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the deck.

First-time commenter here. I've read through some of your archives lately, and have absolutely ADORED every decorating decision you've made. Your deck is coming along nicely. My only idea is adding some sort of outside curtains to the pergola area. I think a crisp white canvas would look really awesome.

    The Nester did it here:

    and her inspiration was here:

    http://asoftplacetoland-kimba.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-front-porch.html

Both projects have made me wish for a deck of some sort to hang curtains from. Maybe that helps?

  7. Do like the different lines of the iron! How about a square flat rattan tray with an arrangement of live flowers and a stone finial of sorts for the center of your table? It will add a splash of color while you finish up the rest of your "to do" list?
    All looks fab!

Oooh the chairs are perfect! Love that you made them black. In addition to a chandelier/dramatic thing hanging over the table, have you maybe thought about adding some gauzy sheers to the pergola for some whimsey?

Plants are a definite must - if you haven't found Jamali Garden Supply (they're actually up in NYC), they have really great planters and pots at really reasonable prices.

It's looking great! Can't wait to see what you do next!

  9. Totally adorable chairs!! What a great find! I think once you get some plants and accessories the whole deck will come together.

  10. what about putting your mad sewing skills to work on some cushions?? can't wait to see what you hand over the table!

  11. I love the chairs now that they're black. I think a canopy/fabric type thing would look nice and add a bit of color. Hanging votives might look nice, too. :o)

  12. I love the set and especially love them painted black! Can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the space.

  13. I am always impressed! I never think of painting items to make them work in a space- definately going to use that idea in the future! They really look great!

  14. I absolutely love how your chairs and the coffee table turned out! Great finds!

  15. Weatherproof cushions on the chairs!

  16. I agree on the cushions and something colorful for the table...if you plan on entertaining larger groups, maybe some harem style floor pillows?!

Psssst - your guest blog is up on my site.

    XOXO!

  17. A friend of mine put up some great heavy duty curtains on his covered porch. They look so chic and now obstruct the view of his neighbor's drive way. A cool long white curtain hanging from the side that looks over your neighbors' yard would be too cute and make it feel like a room.

  18. Love the new chairs with the table. So pretty.

  19. Chairs look great, maybe some cushions?

  20. Figures....they don't have one anywhere near me. I like to look and touch and sit in chairs before I buy them.

  21. I love the shape of the chairs, and they look much better now that they are black. I always forget about going to Kmart. Your deck is fabulous, just like the rest of the house.

  22. I saw those in an ad in MS Living and tore the page out. Unfortunately when Kmart was facing bankruptcy issues ours closed. They chairs are so cute and look great with your table!

  23. I'm loving the shape of the chairs and I prefer the black paint instead of the red. I love how the back porch its coming along.

  24. That is fantastic furniture! I'll have to check out KMart!

  25. Loving the chairs. I am thinking a great chandelier overhead and some fun pillows. I alsolove the idea of curtains on the pergola. Good luck, it looks great so far and what fun to create a new space.

  26. Oh, I love that set, and I love that you chose to paint it black. Very nice! :)

  27. Love reading your blog. You've done a beautiful job on your home from top to bottom, inside and out!
Hmmm, other ideas for outside on your deck. Herb garden in clay pots. I chalkboard paint and label mine so my husband can find the herb I need more easily. Thus preventing me from having to say, "never mind, I'll get it." : )
There are some great oil cloth fabrics out there that are fun for easy tablecloths. Adds a quick burst of color and an oil cloth makes for easy cleanup instead of worrying about having to wash/dry clean a more $$$ one. Here's a link to one:

The deck is looking great! I really like what you did with this set.

  33. I've tried to find these chairs online before. Anyone have a link? I seem to be inept at using Kmart's website.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would never have thought to look at KMart!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nichole - They don't appear to be online anymore (they were last week) but with a shipping charge of $90 (you read that right, its not a typo), it doesn't make for a very appealing alternative. Your local store may still have them at an even better price!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love it SOO much! It's so perfect! Such a great job with this! Some fun string lights or a candle chandelier above them would be beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Looks Great! Definitely need some plants and I can't wait to see the finished project.

  38. A wonderful find - what a good eye you have!! And no fear of spray paint either! Great job.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow, they looked very nice in red, but they're SO striking in black, nice job! I'd definitely say some nice cushions on the seat and maybe some fabric panels hanging from the pergola.

    ReplyDelete
  40. looks real perrty...i agree with the red..good job.

  41. I miss Kmart , they took our all away.
Love the chairs in black , gorgeous .
I also loved ym electric staple gun , damn thing broke though , just one time I took it out for a project and it was done, so I now have the backwards kind of manual one it never fails me and it is easy on the arm , just in case yours suffers a death .

  42. Great chairs! I love how the deck is turning! I think it's perfect. The only thing I would add is definitely some color! Maybe some lanterns, plants etc.... Must be amazing to sit out there with a glass of wine. Yummy!

  43. I love that set! and the new paint job makes it even better!

  44. Kmart actually has some great stuff. I have drapes in my master BR from the MS line and I upholstered my headboard in the same fabric. Cheap, too!

  45. Multi colored solar fabric lanterns! Try Smith and Hawken.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Looks great! Love how you "find" things and then turn them into exactly what you want......very clever.

  47. Cushions in a great fabric for the chairs and tall planters in a similar color to your newly painted furniture. Janell

  48. Absolutely - a drop-dead chandy over the table. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Those chairs are divine in black, by the way...

    Cheers,

  49. I'm a little late - but had to join in and say I love the transformation! KMart is the closed store to our house so I head there for convenience vs. our overcrowded WalMart. I did spy those chairs...hard to miss the red but they look gorgeous in black. Your balcony also reminds me of one that is featured in one of my posts (http://thediyshowoff.blogspot.com/2009/06/monicas-beautiful-balcony-makeover.html). I think curtains, a chandelier and outdoor rug would look beautiful in your area too! Good luck!

Ps. I'm new to your blog. Nice to "meet" you! :)

  50. Love what you have done....
now I think it needs some Black and White trellis pattern pillows on the chairs.
Lanterns, Black urns with some fab ferns....
    Perhaps a pop of yellow....
