Vexed in the bedroom.

Generally I tend to have a very good idea of what I want a room to look like when Im done with it. I have lots of ideas to start, toss them around in my head for a while and decide. I can usually "see" what its going to look like at the end without much effort. Did you notice how I wrote 'generally'? That’s because there is one room that has vexed me (yes, I said vexed. Dramatic, right?) - our master bedroom. It’s the only room where I've never had a proper vision for how it will come together. Sure, I've flailed about trying different things but, not surprisingly, have never been happy with the result.

I admit, this room has certainly come quite a long way from 3 years ago.

Master Bedroom Before

When it came to finishing it off, I was stumped. Who knows why?

If you've been reading for a while, you'll know I had the finishing the master bedroom as a home resolution for 2009. EPIC FAIL! Sure I did make a few bits and pieces of progress. I got a lovely headboard and nightstands. The ornate frame got sprayed and hung over the fireplace. I designed some romantic collages that make me misty. I managed some giant silhouettes with a scroll saw and my fingers intact. But still, it just wasn't looking finished.

BedroomCollage

So when I won a virtual decorating package from Paula Grace Designs, Inc., I knew exactly what I was going to use it for. And she sent me a great binder full of ideas - a rug choice that was perfect, beautiful fabric swatches for linens, an amazing chaise lounge chair for the area around the bay windows. She had a vision! (Of course she did - she is a talented professional! If you need some proper interior design help, this is a fabulous service.)

I now had someone elses ideas for this room! I stared at that binder for a while before I realized that it wasn't what I had envisioned for the room. And poof - there it was, the idea that had been alluding me for so long. I did take some of her suggestions so that alone helped me a great deal...I just went a slightly different way. More importantly, she helped me crystallize my own ideas.

So I started the hunt for the items I needed. I will admit I spent a good bit deal more than I originally had hoped. I just couldn't find the pieces I need at my usual cheap haunts. Ultimately I decided after struggling in here for 2 years, a couple of splurges were in order. Of course I mixed in some diy and budget friendly options as well. Here is a sneak peak at what I have in mind.

BedroomIdeaBoard

So you're wondering where my after pictures are, right? Sorry - I don't have them because I haven't put much of it together yet. I have most of the pieces ready to go and one little sewing project to finish before I can put do a presto chango. I'm kind of nervous now that I've really took the plunge. What if I hate it? Either way - Ill tackle that this weekend. Wish me luck!

  1. I feel the same way about our dining room. Stick a table and chairs in, no problem, right? WRONG. It is boring boring and the least cohesive space in the house... and it's in the middle of the house where you walk through to get to the living room and kitchen. Good luck on your "problem room" and maybe it will help spark some ideas for me too!

  2. Looks like it will be great! I'm guessing that gray comforter is from Anthropologie? They have a similar comforter (which I just ordered and LOVE) from Pottery Barn (and maybe a similar comforter cover at West Elm?) They don't have the complete circles in the center, but do have the gathered tucks.
What about one of your cool photos enlarged over the bed?

  3. Heather - Yep, its from Anthropologie. It actually looks totally different than the Target one. At least to me. (I actually ordered that Target comforter first and it had to go back. Totally wrong color. I don't do duvet covers (Im a comforter only girl) so the West Elm option was out.)

  4. I can't wait to see the Anthropologie comforter! I am excited. We just moved from Florida to northern Kentucky and I am stumped in our master bedroom too. It is HUGE and I just can't seem to get it together. I usually have an idea but I am stumped. Maybe you will spark my creative juices again.

  7. I have 2 of the yellow/gray Dwell Studios for Target pillows on my couch and I love them! They are fluffy and keep their shape, and if they ever do get flat or stained, the covers unzip!!

  8. looking forward to the after. the 'before' is gorgeous but i think the addition of some yellow will be really nice!

  10. Thanks for the reminder that, every once in a while, ya need to trash your plan and see a room in a new light...

    SO needed that right now~

I love that Amy Butler fabric - I was just looking at her fabrics this morning. I think I'm going to use a few different designs to recover my dining room chairs! I love the mix of yellow and gray!

I am new to your blog but enjoyed reading a few of your posts this afternoon. I will be returning. I too own an old home - 1880s Victorian farmhouse in NJ - and know well all the trials and tribulations that go with it. Looking forward to seeing progress in your master bedroom.

  18. so, are you keeping the wall color? our room is painted a similar color and i too have been struggling with how to finish it. i love the yellow/gray combo, i'm planning on using something similar in another room in our house. can't wait to see the end result, love the ideas that you posted!

  19. Wait! Where is your current comforter from? I speak of the black patterned one. I have always loved that set. Hoping you will share the source ... thanks!

  20. I can't wait to see! I always love what you do with your space. I'm about to embark on a remodel/renovation project to make room for a new baby (and take care of some loooooooong overdue upgrades). Seeing what you've accomplished over the past three years is a HUGE inspiration. Just don't tell me how hard it really was! :)

  21. Katie - Im definitely keeping the wall color. I really like it.

Jen - The damask pattern comforter you see in these photos was from Walmart. A steal at less than $100 for the whole set. Its being downgraded to second string though...the pattern just isn't working.

  22. I'm so excited to see the finished project! I'm the same way with our master bedroom, I just have no idea what direction I want to go. I'm saving that for last - especially since it is the room people see the least. But every time I see a photo of a beautiful master bedroom I feel that twinge of envy inside. Cannot wait to see yours - I'm sure it will be fabulous and must be such a relief to have some concrete ideas down.

  23. I can't wait to see the finished bedroom, I bet it will be amazing. I like the muted colors you are using.

  24. I have to say that I usually hate having a tv above the fireplace. However lately I've seen great designs like yours - the frame around the TV is absolutely awesome! Originally my boyfriend wanted our tv over our fire place in the living room I thought it was too high, and I worried about cords (we don't own the home, if we did we could drill holes and fix this problem). I really, really love your bedroom and can't wait to see what else you've got going for it!

  25. How exciting to have won that consult! I can't wait to see the results of the two of you collaborating. I'm sure it will be beautiful!

Can't wait to see the end result!

ps don't want to stir the vexatious pot - but, i can see a silver leaf chinoiserie screen in that room

  28. It's going to look fabulous!! Where did you find the photo with the dog {lower right of the idea board}?

  29. You look like you are heading in a beautiful direction! I too am so completely stumped on what to do in our bedroom. I change my mind about color schemes and fabrics every other day! SO frustrating!

  30. I got so excited for the after pics and then none!! hahaha totally kidding, I know it takes alot of work and we will all be in LOVE with your master bedroom just like you are :)

  33. So you're going with gray and yellow - or I presume you are from your inspiration board. I can't wait to see the reveal. I love the inspiration board, especially that lovely gray cushion gathered into the centre.

  35. I KNOW it will be GORGEOUS! Can't wait to see the finished product =)=)=)

  36. I am so loving the yellow and gray right now. Your bedroom is beautiful as is but I can't wait to see the final product.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yay for gray and yellow! It will make you so happy.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love your posting today and can't wait to see the final results. What I liked best is you saying that although you liked the ideas that were sent to you it actually made you come up with a plan that you hadn't thought of before. I think the great thing about working with interior designers isn't always just following their plan but them helping you come up with what works best for you! Many of my projects never look like what they were originally set out to look like!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Can't wait to see the final result! I love the gray and yellow too! You have impeccable taste!

  40. I cannot wait to see the finished product! I have a question that I am dying to ask- how does it feel to come home to such a neat, gorgeous, clutter-free home with shiny floors and clean walls? Ahhhhhh, I'll just close my eyes and imagine.....

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sometimes we need the vision of someone else to help ours along. I know it will all work out beautifully.

    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Cary - Clutter free? Hah! I only photograph a room when its neat. My house has plenty of crap laying around most of the time. The shiny floors don't have anything to do with me really - its the high gloss poly we used on the floor.

Carrie - I found the photo on flickr. Ill post more about it when I show you what I did with it. Oh and its a cat - not a dog.

  43. Isn't it wonderful when the vision suddenly just POWS??!!! (for lack of verbal acquity at the moment)
I get such a kick out of those "AHHA" moments.
It's true clarity often happens after a little time and some inspiration from an outside source.
Your bedroom has lovely bones and what you've chosen thus far is lovely as well. I'm waiting with baited breath to see the BIG FINISH!
I've been "dally"ing @ with our master for TOO long. It is almost (GULP) 20 years now, maybe only 17-18, but GEEEEZZZ! THAT is quite embarassing. My vision has certainly shifted around in that length of time. I'm hoping YOU will be my inspiration! It's about time!

  44. I cant wait to see what you have worked up...i am sure it will be great. What about a nice mirror of some size, ZGallerie has some really great ones that are chrome (shiny silver), and maybe a live plant to work on the feng shui of the room. paper whites in a large hurricane are a easy inside grower.

  45. Since the chair is small in scale (a bit of a problem for you) I think you should get a fabulous end table (as suggested), and put it and the chair in your window space. Then, where the chair is now, find an antique couch to have recovered in a coordinating (but not matchy-matchy) fabric for your room. This will better fill the space in front of your collages. And you definitely need a big rug to pull all the pieces of furniture together in the room. Keep it neutral. Hope these ideas help!

PS- I just recovered an old stool in my kitchen with the Amy Butler yellow bubbles on gray/green. LOVE that fabric!

  46. Dude, how did I miss this post?! Cannot wait to see how it turns out. Love that inspiration board with the yellows/grays. Yes!

    ReplyDelete
  47. LOVE your moodboard! I've been holding to those Target gray/yellow pillows for a year, hoping to incorporate them in our bedroom as well, but voilà, haven't found the right gray bedding yet. Would you care to share where it is from? I mean sheets. I would definitely need a duvet cover, I love our dawn duvet :)
TIA! And can't wait to see the finished room!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Marina - the gray sheets are from (where else?) Target. Probably in the aisle over from where you found the pillows. Can't give you any duvet cover info as I hate duvets but Im sure you could find something. (I always find it it very difficult to find chic comforters when everyone seems to use duvet covers)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mrs. L, :)))) Thank you for your answer! I've read some reviews on them, and seems one REALLY has to buy them in B&M, not on-line... b/c of the color issue... did you get yours in store? I bought my pillows on-line and I'm glad I did, the ones in our store were with pulls and stained all over, yuck!

  50. it is going to look fabulous and i love the gray/yellow color combo! Can't wait to see the finished room.

  51. Looks beautiful! Looking forward to seeing the big reveal. Where is the rug from? It's my biggest challenge right now -a light, floral patterned rug.

  52. How did I miss this post (I came over from today's post)! Thanks for the shout out. I'm glad I helped crystalize your ideas! That's what its all about. I love the palette. The yellow adds a nice fresh pop! Now I'm headed back to today's post to see the results. I only peeked before I came here.
