Games on!

Even though I am far, far away from the target teenage demographic, I am not even embarassed to say I'm excited to see the screen adaptation of The Hunger Games. I loved the books and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the movies don't ruin them. (I'm looking at you Twilight series)

The casting choices seem to be pretty good which is a huge plus. How awesome is Lenny Kravitz's Cinna going to be?

Who else will be cheering Katniss and Peeta on?

ACK!  I'm so excited too!  I just read the first book over the weekend.  Everyone kept telling me I had to read it and I was so resistant to jump on the bandwagon.  (I read the Twilight series long before any talks of movies.)  I had a long flight to take last Friday so I figured what the heck.  I devoured it!  LOVED it!  Already almost done with number 2.

I really enjoyed the first book, but the last two were just kind of "eh" for me.  I'm curious to see so many of the scenes in the book up on the big screen though.  I can't picture Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, and I also can't picture Woody Harrelson as Haymitch.  I thought Stanley Tucci would work for either of those characters, and pictured him as Haymitch for the entire series!

I LOVE the books. I'm an 8th grade English teacher, and we've built our whole cirriculum this year around the novels. It's made for great historical connections and the kids are loving them! I'll be cheering on Katniss and Peeta at a Midnight showing with 3 of my other teacher friends. Happy Hunger Games.

  5. I love these books and really really hope they don't ruin everything with the movies. I'm actually re-reading the first book right now before it comes out.

  6. I can't wait for this movie, I read each of the books in one sitting. I think it's a bit worrying that they won't show any footage of the arena in the trailers, though. That makes me think they know they've ruined that part of it.

  7. I think I'm the only person who hasn't read the books yet. I will be reading furiously so I can see the movie when it comes out!

  8. LOVED this series.  They were filming here in Charlotte, and homebase was in my office building (girl squeal)!!  Jennifer and Lenny were both on the elevators.  All Capitol scenes were shot here.  Can NOT wait for 3/23.

  9. Me me me! We are going this weekend to pre-purchase tix for the midnight showing!! If you haven't yet read Divergent, it's kinda like The Hunger Games - and dare I say it, maybe even better!!

  11. Oh I am so there.  I loved the books, I think I am going with my MIL because she's reading Mockingjay right now :D  My husband was, as usual, unimpressed (insert rolleyes here) but I can't wait.  Lenny is going to rock it!

  12. I can't wait!  My sister made me read the Twilight saga so that I could go to the movies with her (better to be in pairs when dealing with teen madness).  So I'm doing the same with her and the Hunger Games.   I can NOT wait to see Lenny :-)

  13. The author Suzanne Collins also wrote the screenplay! So hopefully we can take comfort in the fact that she wouldnt destroy her own plot! (as so many screenplays do).

You know I've been embarrassed to admit I loved this book series since I too am WAY outside the demographic. You've given me a little courage, maybe I'll put it on my linked in book list. By the way...I agree Lenny Kravitz is an inspired choice, in my mind, Cinna was much more Edward Norton. This is better. Fingers crossed.

  15. I cannot wait for the movie to come out next month! I even have a District 12 t-shirt which I will wear proudly even thought I am also out of their target demographic.

But, I am so thankful that today's YA books are being written so well that they are able to capture a broader audience.

I can't wait!!!! I didn't get into twilight but I couldn't put this series down! I can't wait for the movie to come out!

  18.  You're not alone.  I hadn't even heard of this series until I started seeing the movie trailers on tv.  I grew up on "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings."  I didn't even read any of the Harry Potter or Twilight series.  I guess I was born too early!

  19. I'm in the middle of book two now and loving the series but to be honest, I'm not loving the casting.  Peeta is supposed to be very fair, blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skinned, merchant class.  Josh Hutcherson is not any of those.  I was gonna say that the guy they cast as Gale is too old but I confused Liam with his older brother Chris (who played Thor).  But still, Gale is from the Seam, they're supposed to be dark haired, grey-eyed and olive complected.  Liam is none of these.  I DEFINITELY don't see Elizabeth Banks as Effie...maybe it's just the name, but isn't Effie supposed to be older?

I guess I'm a stickler for following stuff like this in the book.

  20. I flew these books in record time after receivng them for Christmas. I cannot wait...so excited about the movies! Surprised myself since I wasn't the least bit interested in reading or watching Harry or those vampires.

  21. I'm very wary. But yes, I am super psyched about Cinna. He's my favorite character anyway.

  22. You should definitely read it! Im not a sci fi person at all and this was very interesting to me. I imagine it would be even more so for people who enjoy the fantasy genre.

  23. Oh how fun. Where did you get the District 12 shirt from?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh really? I would have never imagined Ed Norton. I was totally shocked to hear about Lenny but the minute I thought about it, I totally forgot what my original mental image of Cinna was so that must mean something.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh really? I didn't realize that. That brings me hope.

  26. Did you get your husband to read the books? I couldn't get my husband to either but I got my brother hooked on them so I can safely say it isnt just a girl thing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Better? I must read it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hurry! And don't watch the trailers b/c it will ruin your own mental images as you read.

can.not.wait!!! and, did you hear that summit got absorbed by lionsgate, who is making hunger games? why the heck couldn't that have happened before the twilight nightmares??? i had such high hopes for them.

and, lenny maybe might be my favorite casting!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm willing to give them some leeway on the arena b/c those are tough scenes to pull off. I just hope they don't make a bunch of stupid plot changes for no reason like they did in Twilight.

  32. I'm psyched for the movie--- just saw the trailer yesterday.  This is the book we're discussing at book club tonight! I'm bringing "roast of squirrel." Yum.

  33. You may already know but Stanley Tucci is in the film. http://www.scificool.com/images/2012/01/Stanley-Tucci-and-Jennifer-Lawrence-in-The-Hunger-Games-2012-Movie-Image.jpg
He seems perfect in that role. Not who i imagined but still great. Who doesn't love Stanley?

  34. I'm having a night out with my girlfriends to go see this flick! The series was awesome - made a long flight to Asia fly by.

  35. ok so personally i love Katniss and Gale together lol but dont feel bad cause I work at Barnes & Noble and i see so many adults clearing the shelves for hunger game books. but im sooo excited for the movie. Lenny Kravits is perfect as Cinna. and Woody Allen as Haymitch...come on #perfect! i think the movie will do the book justice.

Oh yeah, I knew Stanley Tucci was going to be in it!  But I just can't wrap my head around him being Caesar Flickerman.  I'm sure it'll be a good movie though!

  37. I'm even farther from the teen demographic...I'm a 50-something grandma who LOVES The Hunger Games. I even got my husband to read book one, now he's hooked too.

I am a firm believer that although there may be books you are too young for there are never any that you are too old for.  Demographics be damned.  For anyone who loved The Hunger Games, they should try the book Divergent.  I'd tell you who wrote it but someone borrowed my copy.

I had to constantly beg my 10 year old to lend me his book, but he always had to take it to school...bummer.  I read it as fast as I could, and went and bought the rest, and made sure I was way ahead of him so that he did not need it for school.  We both are counting down the days for the movie to come out...we are even dragging my husband and daughter to go see it ;)

  41. I feel totally out of the loop.  I've heard so many good things about these books so it puzzles me as to why I haven't read them yet.  Must read.

Just finished The Hunger Games today because I saw a preview for the movie over the weekend, and I always always have to read the book before I see a movie based on it.  I have to say... I couldn't put it down! I got it at the library yesterday morning and finished it this afternoon.  Now I'm waiting (not so) patiently on the library hold list for the 2nd book...

  43. Can't wait! The first book was the best and yes I love the fact that Lenny is Cinna. Looking forward to seeing this!

  44. I don't know - I can totally see Woody playing a big drunk! :P

I can't WAIT!!!  This was one of my favorite series.  I thought the acting in the Twilight movies was ehh.... especially the 1st one.  But, I do have a major crush on Robert, so that makes it worth it for me anyhow.  I do think these will be much better... the "older" characters are cast well, in my opinion... and I think Lenny will make a great Cinna!  I pictured President Snow as a smaller man though... kinda frail.

  46. Everyone raves about this book, but it sounds a little creepy too me!

    ReplyDelete
  47. That's what I thought too...who'd want to read (or watch) adolescents fighting to the death?  But once I picked it up, I KNEW.  The gruesome parts are handled with care and even though it sounds really awful, it isn't.  These are important themes....about love and loyalty.  About forgiveness and freedom. And about how to stand up for what's right.

  48. magnolia2:16 PM

I also envisioned Gerald Butler as the mentor...but I have to admit that Harrelson will make a better drunk.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Funny how everyone envisions something totally different. I don't remember the book providing much of a description of Haymitch so I guess its not surprising. Thats part of the reason why I tell everyone to read it before they see the movie (or even the trailer). Reading a book after the characters have a face is a big bummer.

  53. Three books wasn't enough, now I just want more (speaking of which, any suggestions for a good read that leaves you feeling like these did?)! I already have plans to see the early showing after opening night, in hopes of avoiding all of the young crowd. Can't wait!

Little bit p****d (upset) as I can't find the first book in the series!!! Must have loaned it out to someone and not sure who now. I want to read it again, so will have to buy another!
    Worth it tho'...

GAAA I'm 40 and I can't wait for this movie to come out!  I read all the books in a matter of days and have now got all my friends and co-workers hooked.  I think the casting is great.  I'll even dismiss the fact that Josh (Peeta) doesn't have blue eyes in the film.  I think Woody Harrelson is great for Haymitch.  He was 16 when he won the quarter quell and now it's 25 years later.  That would make him 40(ish).  I never pictured him as really old (I'm 40 so obviously, that's not old).  Love Lenny Kravitz as Cinna.  Artistic and cool and collected.  I think they did a great job casting and I'm excited Suzanne Collins is co-writing the screenplay.

My daughter has loved this series ever since my mother introduced her to it! I read Hunger Games over the weekend and am excited to see the movie. I think Woody and Lenny were both inspired casting choices.
