Dresser seeks home

Someone in my neighborhood is selling a dresser and of course I'm drawn to it.  I try to resist these kind of purchases (see: If I were a hoarder) but this one might have to come home with me.  I have a good spot for it at the shore.  So the question is: What will become of me?

  1. Ooh, that is tough because that is an awfully good chest with nice big drawers. Chests are flexible too and can act as linen storage. I think that one is a good acquisition.

  2. Paint it navy with a thick white stripe down the center and spray that hardware gold, possibly dip the feet in gold. That's what I'd do :)

    1. Love that idea. The room I'm putting it is in Navy so Id probably reverse but I think it would look perfect that way. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. The census seems to be to paint it. I would chalk paint the piece a dark color, and classic hardware to it to make it more modern. Maybe even consider painting it the same exact color as the wall.

    1. I know its hard to tell when looking at a photo but the finish is damaged so I'll definitely be painting it. Have you used chalk paint? Maybe this should be my foray into a whole new world :)

    2. Yes. I tried Annie Sloan and made my own with plaster of paris and flat paint. I liked the Annie Sloan vs the plaster of paris/flat paint combo. However, I think that was due to human error. the beauty of this type of paint is it sticks to any surface. If the there is heavy damnage I recommend a little sanding and wood filling, but otherwise you are good to go.

I am about to make over my littles nursery to a big girl room and plan to paint either the bed, dresser or both. Perhaps I will blog about it and link you to it?

You should take the drawers out and paint it one color. Then put storage bins inside where the drawers were. Easily accessible storage that is cute and functional! ~ Lauren (East Coast)

  5. What's to become of you??!! You are already a makeover queen, so another chest of drawers will not spoil your reputation! I still love the blue dresser with the map on top (and of course there's the octopus!), and Miss Agatha is going to need loads of drawer space shortly........buy it and deal with it when you have time haha!

  7. I love the idea of a navy dresser with a wide white stripe! That would look awesome. The question then becomes what hardware? I would forego the traditional nautical brass and go with nickel.. just sayin'!! :o)

By the way, I am hosting a giveaway on my blog this week for Jan Shower's new interior design book, Glamorous Retreats. I would love it if you would stop by and enter!

    1. Thanks Rebecca. I haven't taken a good enough look at the hardware to decide if its salvageable. Its off to the shore to be saved for a winter project :)

  8. It's too bad that the finish is so damaged, because it looks like just a good clean up/polish up would be beautiful. I wouldn't get too "tricky" with it...keep it classic, whatever you decide. It's a definite keeper though!

    1. Even if it weren't that damaged (and it is!), I'm just not a big cherry wood fan. I could sand it down to bare wood and wax it but with the baby, I don't really have a good space to do that without her breathing all of it in. So paint it is! But I dont find wood to be all that precious anyway.

  9. Nice! We have an antique tall dresser in our living room. Inside the top several drawers are dvds, then blankets and heating pad and the last one is gift wrapping materials. It is usually topped by a fern. I love it and love that it isn't too common to have a dresser in the living room.
