Hello there!

Thank you to Mrs. Limestone for inviting me over to be a guest blogger on her lovely blog. Let's hope she won't regret extending this invitation. =o) What an honor this is! What can I say about the talented, effortlessly chic Mrs. Limestone that hasn't already been said? I recall discovering her truly inspiring blog a couple of years ago, and I've been a huge fan of hers ever since. I proceeded to read.....and read.....and read, immersing myself in the brilliant photos, archives and all (barely stopping for bathroom breaks). And so my addiction with the Brooklyn Limestone began......

When she invited me to share my favorite nook, I jumped at the chance. I have countless nook spaces stored away in my inspiration file but I decided to go in a different direction because I recently tackled my tiny closet. This sad shoebox of a space needed to be tamed with the proverbial organization whip. If there ever was a miniscule nook, my closet is it. A "mook" if you will? Picture Mariah Carey's mammoth diva closet that's the size of a small country. Now, imagine the complete opposite and THAT is my closet.

This was the despair it was in for over two years (pretty much since the day we moved in). No staging requred, my friends. That laundry basket? Yep, full of clean clothes. I've been tempted to just wear my PJ's in public, for facing this sad sight made getting dressed almost unbearable.

It's not normal to store shoes and other acoutrements in shopping bags? Whaaat!

After a trip to the Container Store for (wait for it...) containers, Target for shelves and a mirror, HomeGoods for fancy/space-saving hangers, and my basement for miscellaneous items--this is the result (forgive my photos, the lighting's tricky in there). You won't find any fancy shelving systems here; just simple/easily assembled storage solutions. Note: I have a dresser that houses everything else that I couldn't cram into this space and the rest went into the donations pile.

This odd decorative accessory was tucked away in my basement (Pier 1 clearance $4.98). Is it a pinecone? Artichoke? Asparagus tip? After two coats of semi-gloss white spraypaint, I'm excited to report that it now resembles a.............giant Q-tip. Awesome. But it works beautifully as a hat display so I don't care what it is.

Addiction #12: scarves.

Am I crazy to call my claustrophobic closet my favorite nook? Has Freckles Chick finally had one too many glasses of wine? Yes and yes. While my nook isn't exactly going to grace the glossy pages of a magazine, it simply embodies what I crave: organization, budget-conscious decisions, and a dash of creative thinking. For just under $100, I introduced order and personalization to my very humble closet (as opposed to various closet systems out there that cost upwards of $400).

No, the square footage of the space has not changed (don't I wish) but I was able to use the vertical space to my advantage. This particular layout works as it caters to my material things in a way that makes sense to me. Organized chaos! Surprisingly, with most everything in plain sight, getting dressed is that much easier and even more enjoyable.

Besides, I don't think society was ready for me to debut my slouchy micro-fleece PJ's with the unicorns all over them . You’re welcome, society. =o)

Thank you so much for letting me share this humble nook with you all!
Again, a heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Limestone for having me!

The amount of taste stocking that tiny space is awesome and now it looks like art - all color coded and in neat rows. Thank you for this!

@ live a colorful life: Mr. FC's been relegated to the closet in our home office. The trade-off is that it's bigger. =]

Thanks again for letting me share this nook with you all. It's been so much fun!

  30. Okay, that inspired me to get off my butt and get my own closet done. I've been considering getting the "fancy" hangers for a while. That's it, I'm so doing it! And I know that I could be using my shelving space much better than I am.

  40. I heart freckles chic! She does everything and anything with such style and grace! Your closet rocks, girl!

  41. What a great closet! I love all that organization. I'm currently trying to figure out my 1950's tiny closet that I share with my rather tall husband who loves shoes more than I do! That aside, I'm wondering what you are storing those fabulous headbands on. Our headbands are just floating about our home all willy-nilly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You wonderful, fabulous people. My sincerest thanks for taking the time to leave such kind, complimentary words. I'm honored. So incredibly stoked that you find my humble nook motivating. Good luck with YOUR closets!!

@ Amie: I'll totally clean out your closet if you pay me in shoes. HA! I imagine you have quite the collection!

@ Shannon & Megan: The headbands holder is just an acrylic jewelry holder similar to the one I've linked to (below). I attached adhesive felt strips (the ones that you attach to the bottom of furniture to prevent them from scratching floors) to the top to hold the headbands in place. It's not quite perfected yet (they do occasionally slip off) but it does the job for now.

  53. I love a good closet makeover... probably because I could use the ideas. That shoe shelf would be the perfect solution for me, and I love the headband stand - they are the hardest thing to store neatly.

Beautiful. What fun it must be to pick out an outfit now!

  62. Freckles Chick,
Love your closet redo! I have been following your blog for a long time and you never disappoint!
I know this is a boring question but...would you provide a link to the shelves you got at Target? The one you have your shoes lined up on?
    Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. @ Eryn: Thanks so much for being a long-time reader--you are so kind!

Sure thing (not a boring question at all)! I can't find the shelves I bought listed on the Target website but most of their stores do carry them. They're the white Closetmaid stackable shelves ($9.99/each). Very easy to assemble (took me about 10 minutes, seriously). Apparently Home Depot carries them too, here's a link:

    Hope that helps!
