Taking a chance on the Ikea Docksta

Despite a lot of mixed reviews, I just couldn't resist the beautiful form (that is blatantly stolen from the much more gorgeous but too much of a splurge Saarrinen tulip tables) of the Ikea Docksta.

It fits perfectly in the eating nook of the shore kitchen.  Time well tell if it was a worthy purchase. The only sort of review I can give right away was that it was easy to put together and it seems stable to me right now.

Time has had its way with my no sew draperies.  I've been looking for some ready made options but nothing really jumping out at me.  Any suggestions?

  1. I have found that Hobby Lobby has extra long curtain panels. In addition, they are always on sale or you can use the 40% off website coupon. I have gotten really cute chevron burlap curtains there.

    1. Thanks for the tip. We don't have a hobby lobby near us so it wouldn't have even occurred to me to check their site.

  2. Indian cotton voile is what we have for bedroom curtains (we are not overlooked, and anyway, your blind would keep peeping eyes out when you are not there). They are so floaty, and have little ties, so I used a broom handle and oversized wooden curtain rings, tying the curtains to them. So easy to wash and dry, and never look shabby. Don't know where to suggest you look in the US though. But good luck whatever you choose!

  3. We've had our DOCKSTA for a few years now. Maybe 3 or 4? The top hasn't held up well but I still would buy it all over again. I've placed hot dishes on it (my fault) and now I've got bubbled laminate in a few areas. It also has chipped over time. But again, it's a great table, its sturdy and has a great shape. No regrets here.

    1. Thanks for the warning! I wouldn't have even thought about the heat laminate issue so now I know. Since we dont eat here everyday, I'm hoping it will last us a good while.

  4. We had the DOCKSTA table for 3 years. It was great initially but got super wobbly. With 2 small kids leaning on it at dinner time, drinks would spill. We decided to throw it out and found a tulip base on Craiglist, had a wooden top made…WAY better at the same cost. Good luck!

    1. Thats a great alternative but I've been looking for something like that for 5 years without success so it was time to give up the ghost :)

  5. I just bought some Moroccan print curtains from Kohls. I was actually surprised at some of the options I found there. Target had some cute prints as well if you're looking for something that won't completely break-your-bank. Searching for curtains was terrible in my opinion, I had the hardest time finding any 'cute' ones! The curtains I ended up with can be seen in my most recent post as well!

  6. I just love the silhouette of the tulip table. Good to hear so far so good. It's perfect there! And the fact that it was easy to assemble is a first for IKEA ;-)

    1. So far it looks good as new. It hasn't been that long that I would expect otherwise but I'm glad I made the purchase.
