Rainbow Stripe Desk Makeover

If you are following me on Insta, you might remember this little french provincial style desk we picked up for $20 bucks at a flea market. Aggie actually chose it so it was an easy sale. I shared a photo of her standing next to it proudly and soooo many people messaged me to say they had this same desk growing up in their bedroom. Not surprising since it was a big seller for years from Sears. It originally sold for $79!

Obviously I couldn't leave it as it was.

A couple of coats of chalk paint, a little refresh of the hardware and some rainbow stripes  for the top.  This was exactly the kind of makeover this piece needed to give it a updated look but didn't require much effort.  Aggie loves her new desk and it adds some great storage for all that paper that 6 year olds seem to create in their wake.

Nightstand turned into a Mini Dining Room Sideboard

Anyone else living in an old home knows it's a constant battle to find storage for all of the things we need for modern living that our Victorian friends seemed to manage without. Especially now with little kids, the storage space we built during our renovation just never seems enough.  So when said goodbye to our high chair, that spot seemed like the perfect spot for a small sideboard to hold all those little odds and ends that you need for diner parties.

The only problem was that spot on the wall was quite narrow so something ready made just did not exist. So instead of a traditional sideboard, I had to get creative with what would fit in that spot.

Off I went to Lowe's, my go to source for all things DIY.  Not surprisingly, they are also a great source of storage and organizational products (I could spend all day just in that aisle alone). They have everything from bins to pegboards to hooks to closet systems so I knew they would have a solution.

Turns out a small chest or in this case, this beautiful Chevron nightstand was the perfect fit. (I was really hoping this beautiful curved pine chest would fit but alas my wall was too narrow.) Aside from being the exact width I needed and visually lovely, it also has two built-in USB ports on the back which was a total surprise.  I can create a nice charging station right here down the road.

My first step in turning this nightstand into a dining room storage piece was lining each drawer with shelf paper.  I used Duck shelf liner in their 'Grey Gate' pattern - one roll was more than enough. Aside from just looking a little cuter, the plastic lining helps things stay in place when opening and closing the drawers.  Once that was in place I turned to my new obsession; bamboo drawer organizers. Specifically I used these three sizes: 15x6 , 9x3 and 9x6. They turned this open drawer into a custom space for every little small item I use for dinner parties including fancy cutlery, cheese markers, votives, napkin rings, appetizer knives and a corkscrew.  The stackable nature of these trays makes the most of every inch.  It also makes finding these items and putting them away a breeze.  The only problem with them is once you get a few, you will want to fill every drawer in your house with them. It's completely addictive.

The second drawer I used for my linens and placemats as well as some of my favorite wood slice trays. Amazing what can fit into a tiny space when well organized. I thought I might need some of these drawer dividers (which I'm also obsessed with) but everything fit perfectly without me lifting a finger so score!

And finally I saved the third drawer for appetizer plates and serving dishes.  Things I didn't use everyday but wanted to have easy reach to.  I could have stuffed this drawer with a lot more but by purging a bit, I was able to store my favorites safely and with plenty of space.  The shelf paper really helps here keeping each little dish in their place without any extra effort.

Even though this chest is relatively small, it has made setting up for guests so much easier and has freed up some precious room in my cabinets that help me stay organized day to day.

Living Room Update at the Shore

You know that thing that happens when you buy one new piece and then everything else looks shabby in comparison so you want to change everything?  Yea, well that happened.

I fell in love with this round wood coffee table while shopping for something completely unrelated.  Yes, from Amazon!  Can you believe they sell furniture?  I was kinda shocked myself but I buy everything else on there, why not a coffee table?  Anywho - I had it in my cart for a few weeks and I kept thinking about it.  The problem was, I had a perfectly good coffee table already that just wasn't what I wanted for this new shaped room (see this post about how we shrunk our living room to make a bunk room for the kids). So I put the table up on the local facebook classified ad to see if I could recoup a little money for it.  Lo and behold, I had a lot of interest and sold it within a day!  So then I felt fully justified in treating myself to this new table.  It arrived a few days later but now everything feels a little bit old and worn by comparison.

Before you yell at your screen, I have no plans on actually doing much in here this year.  I still have a one year old who has a penchant for making messes. And the odd shape of this room is really stumping me as to what would be perfect in here anyway. Replacing the furniture right now probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  But I do feel the itch!

Open Concept Dining and Living Room Decor Makeover

Give your builder grade living and dining room a stylish makeover like we did here with some key living room decor changes. It will not surprise you that I absolutely love to help friends decorate their homes.  All the fun and none of the expense - what could be finer?  I can be a little bit ruthless in my quest to get rid of the less desirable but it's all for the greater design good.  So when a friend moved into her less than 20-year-old home, naturally I had lots of suggestions.

Let's see the living room decor before our makeover:

Living Room Decor before from one side of the room - sofa on left wall, wood floors, 2 brown chairs in center and on left.View from living room from the other side showing the open concept dining room in the background While I couldn't convince her to do anything drastic (I was really pulling for a black dining room but she wouldn't go for it), I think the change is pretty dramatic.  Just goes to show you how much the right furniture arrangement can change the look and feel of a room.

Living Room Decor after the Makeover

Exterior wall with fireplace that now has windows with black and white solid curtain panels on them, 2 teal sofas that face each other flank either side of the fireplace The fireplace surround was a pretty garish green marble but the cost to replace it would have been considerable, so instead, she painted it using a dark grey chalk paint.  I wasn't sure if was going to work but it looks amazing! The chalk paint's flat finish mimics a dark stone slate perfectly -  you would never guess it was painted marble.

Gold and Glass Bar Cart perfect for living room decor with Selter, liquor bottles, glasses and lemonsAngled view of fireplace with chalk painted hearth. The mantle has a big clock on top with 3 decorative items to the right

Dining Room that Complements the Living Room Decor

Dining room with cream curtains on 2 double hung windows, new grey wood table with upholstered cream end chairs and 3 cross backed chairs on each side Despite not having the right spot for that lovely bar cart, I can enjoy it vicariously through her dining room.  And she scored huge by finding the table and side chairs on super sale at a furniture outlet. I love how clean and updated it feels even though there was no construction required (the joys of a newish home!) What do you think of the living room decor before and after? Both rooms are painted in Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. Links to the specific or similar items found in the rooms can be found below.

Reading Corner aka "Mom Nook"

One of my oldest friends has been renovating her bedroom for an eternity so when I had the chance to work with Hayneedle on small furniture project, I immediately thought of her space.  She is a hard working mom of two energetic boys and I knew she could need nothing more than a little corner just for herself.

How to shop thrifted furniture and NOT bring home bed bugs [Sponsored]

You don't have to know me well to know I'm a sucker for used furniture whether it be flea market finds, Craigslist scores or even curbside treasures.  But no matter how tempting a piece or how low the price, there is one looming risk that is always at the back of my mind: the dreaded bed bug. Case in point this perfect pink tufted chair that I knew my daughter would love in her room and was being sold for a steal!

Bed bugs are a scourge for anyone but especially for lovers of used furniture!   So I'm quite careful in what I bring home, following a simple but strict system for how to keep those little nasties out of our house.  While nothing is foolproof, I'd like to think my system works pretty well.  Perhaps it can help you as well. I've been asked about how I deal with this quite a few times so it seemed like a great time to share.

First things first - you must INSPECT.  And I don't mean a cursory glance.  Bring a flashlight and a magnifying glass if necessary.  These bugs are great hiders but there are some tell-tale signs you can spot if you look carefully in seams including pinprick stains the bugs leave behind, molted skins or even the bugs themselves.  Consider the risk of the item itself - something like a mattress or any soft item in a bedroom is going to be more likely to be an issue then say a kitchen stool or a hallway table. Consider the source of the find. I always prefer to talk to the previous owner if possible to get a sense of why the item is being discarded. While bed bugs don't discriminate, I always tend to feel better to find out the backstory.

Once you've given it a throughout once over and feel pretty confident the item is pest free, it's time to get it home.  The next step is ISOLATION.  If you can, place the item in your garage, basement or even your bathtub for a few days and inspect again just to be sure. Since I don't have a completely isolated space, I create my own by wrapping the item in plastic and letting it sit for as long as practical.

With that step behind me, I like to do one final step in making sure I haven't missed anything and that's TREATMENT. I use a large plastic drop cloth and Hot Shot® Bedbug & Flea Killer Aerosol. This product is water based so less likely to stain, affordable and kills both live bed bugs and eggs before they hatch.  I lay out the drop cloth, use the product as instructed. Always read the label before use!

Once it's gone through my system, I breathe a sigh of relief and feel so much more comfortable using the item in my home.

Country Cottage: Simple Rustic Dining Room

You've already seen the country cottage living room makeover (which definitely qualifies as one of my favorite rooms evah!) so it's time to see the other side of this room which is the dining space. With budget a serious constraint, the decision was the keep this room simple and more cabin like. That way it served as a counterpoint to the living room as well as a calm, open entryway to the whole house.

Renovation was essentially a clean up job. Pulling up carpet, sanding and staining the rustic existing floor boards and the whole space getting a fresh coat of white paint. The dining table and chairs are hand me downs from my sister in law's parents so absolutely free. The indoor herb garden was put together with a few scraps and some hardware and make a great live addition to the room.  The one splurge was this antler chandelier which gives the whole space a fun element while still being clean and modern.

When budget allows, I think these copper chairs along with some drapery and a sisal rug will finish off this room beautifully. I'm trying to convince them a shiplap wall would be pretty rad too but it's a bit of splurge and I think they are all DIY'd out lately.  But plenty of time to work on that in future years - until then, this is a lovely spot to entertain (and my sister in law is an amaaaazing cook and baker so I always look forward to meals here)

Jenny Lind Bed Thrifted!

Guess who is the proud owner of one pre-owned Jenny Lind twin bed?

JennyLindBedThrifted (1 of 2)

After a year of stalking Craigslist I had just about given up and was seriously considering buying new.  Then several of you alerted me to a listing on a local parenting board of this one.  We made a deal and now it's mine. THANK YOU SO MUCH!  You have no idea how excited I am.

JennyLindBedThrifted (2 of 2)

I had to quickly make room in here so I gave the full bed to my brother so I had some room to move around. (If you are interested in that black framed mirror and you are local, drop me a line. I'd be happy for it to find a new home).  The artwork and card catalog will have to be relocated somewhere else around here because I love them both but they don't work with what I have in mind for this room.

I plan on waiting until I paint the room to decide if I'll leave the bed white or paint it a fun color. I'm currently going back and forth on the idea of painting the whole room black or the whole room a bright white.  Decisions, decisions!

I also have to get a mattress. I'm thinking of this foam one - very well reviewed but surprisingly cheap from Amazon.  Anyone have this or something like it and have a review?

Obviously there is a lot more to come in here.

Coastal Kitchen Makeover - The Complete Before + After

We are about to get a huge snowstorm here so what better time to start dreaming of the beach? Perfect timing to share the coastal kitchen before and afters! I know, I know - this is the slowest quick renovation in the history of time but I think it was worth it.  So much brighter, beachy (without being too over the top thematic) and functional. This coastal kitchen makeover made this kitchen much brighter, beachy (without being too over the top thematic) and functional. You have already seen most of the work in prior posts which you can access at the end of this post, but it was time to do a complete post with sources.

This coastal kitchen makeover made this kitchen much brighter, beachy (without being too over the top thematic) and functional. As you might remember, we wanted to keep the renovation tab down so we decided to keep all the plumbing exactly as is. The only real structural change to the room was tearing down half the closet and opening up the space on the left. Essentially we made a galley kitchen into a L-shape – giving us more counter space, a more open feel to the room and allowing the light from the kitchen window to spill into the rest of the apartment. After that it was just finishing work. We went with stock cabinetry and affordable tile flooring to offset the splurge of the marble countertop. The room is so much more open and clean looking now – I really love how it all turned out. It does need a few more accessories (perhaps a bigger shell or wood bowl under the jellyfish print?) and some artwork in the seating area (maybe a new whale chalkboard or some old window art?).  I haven't found just the right thing but I'll stumble upon something eventually.
