Turning to the Parlor Bathroom...

Just back from a trip to Ikea (for a planter that wasn't there anymore - don't you hate when that happens??). While I was there, spotted these silver Ribba frames that I think would be great with some black and white photography.

So now my attention has turned to our parlor floor bathroom (<----If you're new here, click here for a look at the before.) I haven't put an ounce of effort in here since we finished the renovation - I think its time to remedy that.

So now I have the frames - just need to figure out which prints to order. Do I use some of the photos from Paris like this?

Or should I push my lazy butt out into the world and take some architectural photos of Grand Central Station (my original plan) or Brooklyn architecture? Either way, I want to decide this weekend.

What do you think????

Once these photos are up, I think I just need a couple of other items to call this room "finished for now". First a little bit of softness under foot with a little rug. I'm liking the looks of this one but not sure if I want to go with cream. Maybe this one?

And finally, I need to find a tub caddy for the clawfoot. I don't use it that often but when I do, it would be nice to have something to set a magazine and bubbles on. This one from Pottery Barn is tempting but a splurge at $70. It's in a polished nickel finish which is a big plus. Mix matched hardware annoys me.

On the other hand, there is a $15 chrome one sold at Walmart that is hard to resist.

Flashback: Paris Whirlwind

We visited the City of Lights to celebrate my 30th Birthday and our 5th Wedding anniversary. The trip was short (if you haven't noticed, that is our modus operandi) but luxe. We had amazing weather. We stayed in a gorgeous hotel. The whole experience was a dream. We were right in the middle of renovating at the time and stress levels were INCREDIBLY high so it was a great respite from dealing with permits and contractors and sewer pipes and joint compound.
Without further ado, lets get to the photos. GeorgeVRelaxRoomBW
We stayed at the Four Seasons which is an absolute dream hotel. I've been lucky enough to stay in 2 other Four Season hotels but nothing compares to this particular one. We got there early in the day before regular check in time. Instead of making us wait in the lobby like most hotels do, this place whisks you off to a "relaxation room" that has soft feathery beds and candles burning for you to chill out in. Impressive.

The murals on the walls alone made me swoon! As soon as the bellhop left us alone, we were oohing and ahhing over everything - acting like a couple of kids in a candy store. Not long afterward there was a knock on the door. We quickly composed ourselves to act like we were used to all of this luxury everyday and let them show us to our room. It was huge!! These photos don't do this room justice b/c it looks a little bit grandma here but it really was lovely. Perfectly french, at least from a tourist perspective.

Waiting for us on the coffee table was a little surprise from the conceirge. Let me tell you this was the most out of this world pastry I've ever had. We practically ate the plate. I have no idea what you'd call this but it’s a good thing its thousands of miles from me or you'd have to wheel me around in a handtruck.

On a weird note, I'm not quite sure why but there was a photograph of Audrey Hepburn on the nighstand.

Hey, I like Ms. Audrey as much as the next person but I don't need her to be staring at me while I sleep. Is this some strange misconception that the French have about people from other countries? Not that I'm complaining - at least I wasn't in the Jerry Lewis suite.
Ok, I know you're thinking 'Enough about the hotel already!! Go outside!" Righto! So off we went to see the sights.
I don't remember the exact order of how we saw everything but we did a city tour to get the lay of the land.

Our last stop before heading to the airport was Versailles. The crowds were much larger than I imagined but it certainly lives up to its reputation.

Chic on the Cheap: Silhouette Art Step by Step

Generally, I tend to think about a project for a little while before actually doing anything about it. Not so this weekend.

On Friday I found this post at Imperfectly Beautiful and the photo hit me as a great weekend project. I already had our silhouettes so I just had to do the manual labor. The tutorial on Country Living was for smallish corkboard heads. A good idea but I wanted something larger and I wasn't too crazy about the texture of cork.

Off I went to Home Depot to buy a piece of hardboard for $5. I printed our profiles on multiple sheets of paper, taped together and cut out a template.

SiloArt1

Using spray adhesive to stick, on it went.
SiloArt3

I followed the edges of the paper template with a sharpie to make the cut marks.
SiloArt4

Peeled off the template to reveal the shape.
SiloArt5

My plan was to cut that with a heavy duty razor. For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you might have seen a late night frantic question about alternate ways to cut hardboard. I'm sure you have already guessed that the razor didn't work at all. So I had no choice but to borrow my brother's jigsaw. Nervous about losing some important digits (how would I type out blog posts without them??), I forged ahead.

Here is where I would include a snazzy photo of me cooly outfitted in a workman's jumpsuit cutting smoothly in a beautifully organized workroom. Alas, I was in my kitchen, wood braced between two stools, standing a pile of sawdust in my pajamas while sweating profusely as I tried to hold the board with one hand and cut with the other. Not pretty! What should have amounted to certain disfigurement ended up like this
SiloArt6

I added some letters and sanded them all down to smooth out the rough spots.
SiloArt6a

The only spray paint I had handy was semi gloss black so they got a few coats in that.
SiloArt7

Not crazy about the finish on them I considered holding off on hanging them until I could recoat in a flat black with a small roller. But then I realized if I wait, these will probably just be sitting in the box room forever like the rest of the things I always mean to hang but never get the chance. So instead I decided these were good enough. Up over our bed they went.
SiloArta1

I'm so happy with how it turned out. The big boldness of it really stands up with the large damask print. I think it gives the room a little whimsy too which is fun in a personal space like the bedroom.
SiloArt9

And when I get bored of them, its only a few small nails holding it all in place so it won't be too bad to bring down.

Considering the price of $5 (excluding the supplies I already had laying around the house like the paint, paper, sharpie, etc.) I'm really happy with how it all turned out.

But more importantly, now that I have myself schooled in the art of the jigsaw, I know I'm going to be using it again.

Still wandering...

Happy Friday! Believe it or not, I am working on some small diy projects that I hope are blog worthy but nothing to show for it right now. One of those projects is travel related so please forgive me for pulling out some old photos.

South Africa, 2006. Yes, he was that close and pissed!

With my next trip a few months away and my last trip a few months ago, I'm feeling my usual pangs of travel lust. So please indulge me for now.

Would you be interested in seeing some more about past trips or have I bored you all to death with the ones I take in the present? What about wedding photos? Anything else you want me to share that I haven't already?
