Small Space, Big Style Bathroom Makeover

A builder's basic bathroom gets a fresh facelift with shiplap, graphic black and white tiles and and a few industrial accents.

Ready for another impressive before an after? I shared a friend's living and dining transformation last week that just took a little bit of shopping to accomplish. This makeover involved just a tiny bit more work but it's so worth it!

black and white bathroom renovation

Let's take a look at the before. Perfectly functional but needed a style upgrade.

She kept the toilet and the pedestal and put most of her hard work/budget into the floors and the walls. She added texture by planking all 4 walls and painting a bright white. (She used birch plywood sheets in place of traditional shiplap but it looks just as good as the real deal) Then she added contrast with this cement tile like ceramic floor that is a total showstopper. All of that white is totally grounded by the black pattern.

New lighting was key because this bathroom gets no natural light. A new round mirror really softened all the hard edges in this space. Finally she made some decorative swaps with the mirror, towel wrack and shelves. My jellyfish print was the perfect finishing touch if I do say so myself!

I totally love what she did - fresh and updated and making the most of the small space. What do you think?

Open Concept Dining and Living Room Decor Makeover

Give your builder grade living and dining room a stylish makeover like we did here with some key living room decor changes. It will not surprise you that I absolutely love to help friends decorate their homes.  All the fun and none of the expense - what could be finer?  I can be a little bit ruthless in my quest to get rid of the less desirable but it's all for the greater design good.  So when a friend moved into her less than 20-year-old home, naturally I had lots of suggestions.

Let's see the living room decor before our makeover:

Living Room Decor before from one side of the room - sofa on left wall, wood floors, 2 brown chairs in center and on left.View from living room from the other side showing the open concept dining room in the background While I couldn't convince her to do anything drastic (I was really pulling for a black dining room but she wouldn't go for it), I think the change is pretty dramatic.  Just goes to show you how much the right furniture arrangement can change the look and feel of a room.

Living Room Decor after the Makeover

Exterior wall with fireplace that now has windows with black and white solid curtain panels on them, 2 teal sofas that face each other flank either side of the fireplace The fireplace surround was a pretty garish green marble but the cost to replace it would have been considerable, so instead, she painted it using a dark grey chalk paint.  I wasn't sure if was going to work but it looks amazing! The chalk paint's flat finish mimics a dark stone slate perfectly -  you would never guess it was painted marble.

Dining Room that Complements the Living Room Decor

Dining room with cream curtains on 2 double hung windows, new grey wood table with upholstered cream end chairs and 3 cross backed chairs on each side Despite not having the right spot for that lovely bar cart, I can enjoy it vicariously through her dining room.  And she scored huge by finding the table and side chairs on super sale at a furniture outlet. I love how clean and updated it feels even though there was no construction required (the joys of a newish home!) What do you think of the living room decor before and after? Both rooms are painted in Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. Links to the specific or similar items found in the rooms can be found below.

Hand Painted Floor - Hide Your Ugly Vinyl Floor

A dramatic hallway makeover is completed on a small budget including an original hand painted floor, some modern accents, and white walls.

Shot of hallway with hand painted floor
As you might expect, I love talking decor with friends so when my bestie shared she was working on her hallway, I was eager to see what she had in mind.  She was on a strict budget so she was going to do what she could with the space without spending a fortune.  That included keeping the vinyl flooring that was ahem, less than ideal.  A few weeks later I stopped by and was stopped dead in my tracks with the impressive makeover she completed. I so wish I had a before photo to share but you'll just have to take my word for it that this hardly feels like the same home. Yes, that floor is hand painted.  I don't know how many hours it took but I think "a lot" would probably not cover it.  She did not use a stencil but rather marked out the pattern with car detailing tape.  Hard to believe this is all just old vinyl.

I'm just in love with this space and wanted to share it with you too!  I call it moody in the best way possible. This space tells me something about the owner while still being practical.  While it's small in size, the flooring and the art draws the eye in giving it a feel of more space.  Hooks and a bench make it functional.  The "hello" and "goodbye" give it whimsy and finally, the floor gives so much style.

A modern surprise in old Brooklyn

Ever walk past a home and be totally stopped dead in  your tracks?  That's what happened just a few blocks away when I saw the result of this renovation.  It was obviously a renovation because the style of the home is so outside what you normally see (as you can tell from the surrounding homes).  A little google search revealed the gorgeous interiors as well.

Despite being a hard and fast old home lover, I adore what they did here. I wonder how the neighbors feel about it being out of context though.

Perhaps because I live in an old home, some part of me is drawn to clean modern spaces.  Lots of white and light without all the fuss.

What do you think?  Are you a slave to sameness or do you appreciate the stark difference in style? Do you crave a different style than you are generally drawn to?

Anna's Bathroom Renovations

I'm sorry to be wrapping up Anna's renovation series because her results are just stunning. ICYMI her kitchen and dining room transformations are amazing.  But all good houses have to come to an end right?  So to wrap up this series I'm sharing both her master and guest bathrooms.

Beautiful right?  Even more impressive when you consider the before photos.

As you can see, she reconfigured the space a little bit to make the master bigger and the guest room smaller but I love her choices.  Thanks to Anna for sharing!

Basement Family Room Made Merry

Anyone else singing Christmas carols? I know, I know - it's a little early but I can't help myself. Especially since I just outfitted my friend's basement family room for the holidays a little bit early.

[In case you missed it, check out the pretty drastic transformation from a dank storage space to a ski lodge inspired lounge] My friends at Hayneedle provided the goodies and put me right into the Christmas spirit!

I am seriously crushing on these wingback chairs. I need to find a spot to put at least one somewhere in my own house. This window ledge made for the perfect spot to add a hanging star and frosted garlands. The perfect nook for sipping hot cocoa.

I adore a good frosted tree.  Without much in the way of ornaments or other frou frou, it looks so festive!  I simply added a few red berry garlands and some sticks before lighting it up.

Got antlers?  Hang a wreath on it!

I'm so happy with how this space turned out and has put me in the holiday spirit at the perfect time!

Basement Transformation | Storage Space to Ski Lodge

There are few things I love more than a dramatic before / after and I have a good one for you today!   Thanks to my friends at Hayneedle, we transformed a dark, dank and general dumping ground of a storage space into a cozy ski lodge inspired family room.

Hard to imagine this is even the same space!

Earlier this year my friend asked for some advice on how to better use this space in her basement. We started with the renovation - new sheetrock, flooring, trim and lighting made a huge difference but it needed some love in the form of new furniture and accessories to make it truly liveable.

Thats where Hayneedle stepped in and lent a hand.

The family wanted someplace cozy to watch tv, have company over and generally just relax.  They loved to ski so a loose interpretation of a ski lounge was incorporated into the styling.  Since the room was rather long, we created 3 separate zones - lounging, conversation and snacking. The design started with this sectional to allow for lots of comfortable seating.

A soft rug defined the sofa area while also adding texture. The large DIY piece of artwork balanced out the asymmetrical window.  The mod inspired coffee table added some vintage character to the room.

On the other side of the room we took advantage of the natural light to create a little conversation area with two fabulous wingback chairs and round ottoman stools. The perfect spot to read, play chess or simply sit and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate!

And finally on the other end of the room, we repurposed an existing closet into wine and snack bar by  removing the doors, adding shelves and wine fridge.Throughout the room, we added warm little accents like lots of pillows, these fabulous metal antlers, ski lodge inspired trays, vintage looking crates and a moose antler bowl.

As a home blogger, it's easy to get caught up in the pretty and I think this certainly qualifies but what's more, this room will be a space where a family will make lots of happy memories for years to come!  I loved being a part of creating that and I hope it's inspired you as well.
